Spartan Queen Gorgo recounts to her people the Battle of Marathon, in which Persian King Darius I dies at the hands of Athenian general Themistocles. Xerxes, Darius's son, witnesses his father's death. Before dying, Darius advises him not to seek revenge or wage war against the Greeks. The conflict is born from those last words, which each man interprets in his own way. Persian naval commander Artemisia, a cunning warrior, offers Xerxes a very different reading of that advice. Meanwhile, Themistocles tries to unite the Greek city-states to face the Persian invasion.

Trivia about 300: Rise of an Empire

During pre-production, the film was called 300: Battle of Artemisium, a title that many media outlets mistakenly cited as "Battle of Artemisia." In September 2012, it was changed to 300: Rise of an Empire.

Junkie XL composed the soundtrack, marking the first of a continuing collaboration with Snyder. The album was released on March 4, 2014 through WaterTower Music.

Principal photography began in early July 2012 at Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Guardian's film critic, Alex von Tunzelmann, gave it a "History grade: Fail" for its numerous historical inaccuracies.

Paul Cartledge, professor of Greek culture at the University of Cambridge, pointed out that Artemisia, historically a queen and not an abused orphan slave, opposed sailing toward the straits.

In an interview from 2016, Snyder said future sequels to 300 could focus on topics beyond Ancient Greece, such as the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of the Alamo, or a battle in China.

Rodrigo Santoro shot nearly all of his scenes as Xerxes alone in a green-screen studio, since the effects had to turn him into a giant about ten feet tall; he also spent six hours a day in makeup.

The film grossed approximately $337.6 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $110 million, with $106.6 million coming from the United States and Canada.
