Bernardo Bertolucci was not looking for a conventional actress for The Dreamers in 2003. He wanted someone unafraid of total physical or emotional exposure in front of the camera. Eva Green took on the challenge despite warnings from her closest circle.
Her mother (actress Marlène Jobert) feared that the film industry would destroy her.
But the young Parisian already knew her path did not lie in the comfort of light comedies. On that shoot, she showed that her gaze could hold five-minute shots without blinking. International critics zeroed in on the woman who seemed to have stepped out of a 19th-century painting.
In 2005, Ridley Scott cast her in Kingdom of Heaven. The studio's demands led to a theatrical cut that removed much of the film's storyline, but the director's extended version restored its real dramatic weight. That experience taught her how big Hollywood budgets worked.
That role opened the doors of the Bond franchise for her.
In 2006, she played Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. She was not the decorative Bond girl but the intellectual engine of the story. The producers decided she would be the only great love of a 007-year-old agent who had just been rebooted. In doing so, she made audiences forget the saga's earlier stereotypes.
Tim Burton found in her a new creative ally starting in 2012. They shot Dark Shadows together, and later Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in 2016. Green's aesthetic suited the visual darkness the director wanted for his stories.
Her style fit the director's California Gothic look.
Between 2014 and 2016, she starred in the series Penny Dreadful. Playing Vanessa Ives took an extreme physical toll on her, with scenes of possession and rituals. The scripts demanded an intensity that few actresses of her generation were willing to deliver on television.
Because Eva prefers broken characters to heroic ones.
In 2019, she got involved in the project A Patriot as lead actress and executive producer. The film was never shot and ended up in a legal battle at the High Court of London in 2023. Green defended her professional integrity against the investors who tried to blame her for the film's financial collapse.
The actress won the lawsuit and received one million dollars under her guaranteed-payment contract.
In 2023, she returned to major European productions, playing Milady de Winter in The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan. Both installments were shot simultaneously at various locations across France to optimize resources. The total production budget reached 72 million euros.
