Anthony LaPaglia landed in New York with one suitcase and an urgent need to sound like a Brooklyn Italian-American. In Adelaide he had been a professional soccer goalkeeper, but in the United States he got by selling shoes and clearing tables. His first big break came with Betsy's Wedding in 1990. That comedy starring Alan Alda put him on the radar of casting directors looking for tough guys with a vulnerable side.
And the gamble paid off.
Throughout the 1990s he played supporting roles that stole scenes from the main stars. He appeared in The Client in 1994 and was a familiar face in the crime films of the era. But his greatest prestige came on the Broadway stage. In 1998, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor for his role in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. That performance made it clear his range went far beyond gun-toting tough guys.
The industry typecast him as a mobster before he could even say his real name.
In 2002, he took the role that would shape his public life for seven years. Jack Malone was a dry, obsessive, emotionally guarded detective in the series Without a Trace. The show was a pillar of the CBS network and earned him a Golden Globe in 2004. The pace of filming was exhausting, but it gave him the financial security to take on riskier projects back in his home country.
Despite his global fame, he never strayed from Australian independent cinema. In 2001, he starred in Lantana, a psychological drama that swept the industry awards in his home country. LaPaglia has always preferred broken characters to traditional action heroes. So he alternated big Hollywood productions with small films shot in the suburbs of Sydney.
Then television came along and changed the rules of the game.
Many actors of his generation disappeared once their million-dollar contracts ended. But he managed to stay active by choosing scripts where his looks were no longer the top priority. In 2017, he took part in Annabelle: Creation to try his hand at commercial horror. He wasn't chasing critical acclaim; he wanted to understand how the big studio machine worked after the turn of the century.
Maturity has been good to his screen presence. In 2021, he played the killer's father in Nitram, a raw film about the Port Arthur massacre. His work in this movie earned him the Australian Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It's a role where he barely speaks, yet his physical presence fills every frame with a quiet, constant anguish.
Off camera, his passion is still soccer. He owned Sydney FC and remains involved in sports management in California. In 2023, he joined the cast of the Netflix series Florida Man, and in 2024 he released Boy Swallows Universe. In this production, he plays a grandfather with a turbulent past in a magical and violent Australia.
Filming his scenes in Brisbane during the winter of 2023 took just three weeks.
