The script nobody wanted to buy

Nia Vardalos didn't fit the mold of Hollywood agencies in the late nineties. She was told she wasn't pretty enough to be a leading lady or thin enough for traditional physical comedy. Her Greek-Canadian heritage was seen as too niche for mainstream audiences.

She decided to write her own destiny.

After years of honing her craft with the improv group The Second City in Toronto and Chicago, Vardalos gathered stories about her own family. In 1997, she staged a one-woman stage show in Los Angeles in which she recounted the details of her wedding to the actor Ian Gomez. She wasn't aiming for a film career so much as simply finding an agent who would take her seriously.

Rita Wilson saw the show and convinced her husband, Tom Hanks, to produce a film based on that script. The budget for My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002 was just five million dollars. Nobody expected an independent production without major stars to bring in more than 368 million dollars worldwide.

And the gamble paid off.

The Shadow of Massive Success

The movie's impact was so huge that the industry tried to replicate the formula without understanding its key ingredient. Vardalos didn't write jokes so much as universal situations disguised as ethnic everyday life. In 2003, she starred in the series My Big Fat Greek Life for the CBS network, but the show was canceled after seven episodes.

The pressure to repeat the financial miracle began to take its toll.

She tried to diversify her range with Connie and Carla in 2004, a musical comedy about two women who hide from the mafia by pretending to be drag queens. The project grew out of her love of theater, but box office returns were cold. Despite the numbers, the film became a cult favorite in the LGBTQ+ community over time for its take on identity and performance.

Vardalos has always preferred creative control to supporting roles in major studio films. In 2009, she wrote and starred in My Life in Ruins, partly shot at the Acropolis in Athens. It was the first American production in decades to get permission to film at the monument, a bureaucratic milestone few appreciated at the time.

Behind-the-camera control

Vardalos quickly learned that in Hollywood, real power lies in intellectual property. In 2011, she co-wrote the screenplay for Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks, a film directed by the actor himself and starring Julia Roberts. It was a classic screenwriting exercise that aimed to recapture the tone of the optimistic comedies of the 1940s.

Fourteen years passed before she agreed to revisit the story that made her famous. In 2016, she released My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and brought back nearly the entire original cast. The film did well in international markets, but critics were much harsher than they had been with the original.

In 2023, she took full control of the franchise.

For the shoot of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, Vardalos not only wrote the screenplay but also took on directing duties. The crew traveled to the island of Corfu and several locations in Athens to shoot during the summer of 2022. The production relied mostly on local professionals for its crew to cut travel costs and ensure the visual authenticity of the Greek landscapes.

The film wrapped its theatrical run with worldwide box office earnings of 39 million dollars.
