Ian Gomez was born in New York in 1964 with a face the camera loves but that casting directors often relegate to the second row. His beginnings were in Chicago, specifically in the Second City training ground. There he learned that comedy is about timing and pauses, not jokes thrown in the audience's face.
In 1995 he landed a spot on The Drew Carey Show and stuck around for nearly forty episodes. It was his first real taste of steady national television paychecks. But mainstream recognition would take a couple more years to arrive.
And then J.J. Abrams showed up.
In 1998 he was cast as Javier Quintana in Felicity. It was a character that broke with the Latino stereotypes of the era thanks to dry humor and an overwhelming personality. Gomez filmed 45 episodes of the series and earned the respect of an industry that was beginning to value character actors over catalog faces.
His personal and professional life intersected inevitably when he married Nia Vardalos in 1993. Gomez was the direct inspiration for many of the cultural gags in My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002. In fact, he had to play the lead's best friend because his own story was already written into the script.
That independent project grossed more than $360 million worldwide. But Ian Gomez preferred to stay in television rather than try to break into major studio films with leading roles. So he returned to long-form series.
In 2009 he joined Cougar Town to play Andy Torres for six seasons. He earned a per-episode salary that placed him among the best-paid supporting actors on ABC. His chemistry with the rest of the cast was the engine that kept the show alive when ratings began to slip.
It wasn't all laughs on set.
In 2018, his divorce from Nia Vardalos after 25 years of marriage became public. The news was handled with complete discretion, which is rare in Los Angeles. Gomez focused on darker projects, far removed from the family comedies that had earned him international fame.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Physical, the Apple TV+ production set in the 1980s. His performance as Ernie was a reminder that his range went far beyond sitcom punchlines. Gomez knows how to age in front of the camera without resorting to cheap nostalgia.
In 2023 he returned to his ex-wife's universe to shoot My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. The movie was filmed in Greece and marked the close of a professional cycle that lasted more than two decades. Ian Gomez wrapped up his participation in the film and returned to his home in California to evaluate new independent production projects.
The actor has more than 100 credits on his IMDb profile across film and television.
