David Prior spent years watching how a film is taken apart before cutting his own.
His training didn't happen in a conventional film classroom. Between 1999 and 2014, he worked producing the bonus features for the home video editions of David Fincher. He shot hundreds of hours of behind-the-scenes material for Fight Club and Zodiac, explaining to audiences how a suffocating atmosphere is built through editing and lighting.
He learned his lesson in the DVD trenches.
That stint as a documentary filmmaker on other people's sets gave him an unusually patient technical discipline. Prior isn't after cheap scares or the frantic pace of the mainstream industry. His style relies on stillness and a framing that owes more to 1970s European cinema than to fast-food teen horror.
In 2020, the studio decided to release his first feature film with little promotion and in the middle of a global health crisis. The film was ignored by traditional critics during its first week. But time put things in their place through digital word of mouth.
The Empty Man runs 142 minutes and opens with a twenty-minute prologue that has nothing to do with the rest of the main plot. It's a risky move for any first-time director. So the studio tried to cut the footage and re-edit the story to make it easier to digest.
They didn't get it.
Prior kept his vision of a dense, existential cosmic horror that moves away from monsters under the bed. The film became a cult favorite on streaming platforms during 2021. Viewers discovered that behind the look of a teen thriller lay an essay on nihilism and the creation of cults.
And the gamble paid off.
The industry began to look at this guy, who had been filming interviews with cinematographers, in a new light. His ability to build tension with a static shot and an immersive sound design allowed him to hit the radar of major names in the fantasy genre.
In 2022, the director received a call from Guillermo del Toro to take part in his Netflix anthology. The episode titled The Murmuring marked a complete change of style. Prior swapped urban horror for a classic ghost story set in an isolated house by the sea.
Filming was completed in less than twenty days.
Despite the brevity of the format, Prior refused to speed up the pace of the storytelling. He chose to focus on the characters' grief and on the behavior of the flocks of birds that give the story its title. It's a piece that breathes and uses silence as a narrative tool more powerful than any postproduction special effect.
Prior continues to work on the fringes of the major media spotlight. He isn't a director who plasters his face across social media or constantly seeks algorithm approval. His films are slow-cooked and demand a level of attention that the average viewer isn't always willing to give.
In 2022, the production of his episode for the streaming platform used Sony Venice cameras with Panavision H-Series lenses.
