The series was renewed for a second season on March 14, 2016, even before the first season premiered.

On May 20, 2016, Fox Networks Group streamed the first episode in Europe via Facebook Live.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the series an approval rating of 79%, based on 38 reviews, with an average score of 8.1/10.

Jasef Wisener of TVOvermind gave the pilot episode a 4.8/5 and recommended it to horror fans.

Cinemax officially canceled "Outcast" on October 2, 2018, after two seasons, letting the cast's contracts expire and confirming that there were no further plans to continue it.
