Joaquin Phoenix wasn't born with that last name. His parents were part of the Children of God cult and traveled through South America before settling in the United States. In 1978, the family decided to change their original last name, Bottom, to Phoenix to symbolize a new beginning in their lives.
Phoenix started out in television under the name Leaf. His film debut was SpaceCamp in 1986. But it was his role in Parenthood (1989) that convinced critics that River Phoenix's younger brother had an identity of his own in front of the camera.
Then came the silence.
After his brother's death in 1993, he stepped away from the public eye for a while. He returned in 1995 with To Die For under the direction of Gus Van Sant. In this film, he played a manipulable teenager and laid the foundations of his acting technique based on physical discomfort.
Ridley Scott cast him as Commodus in Gladiator (2000). That performance earned him his first Oscar nomination. But Phoenix hates red carpets and the trappings of Hollywood. So he began selecting projects that let him explore the psychology of trauma in an obsessive way.
In 2005, he learned to sing and play the guitar to portray Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. He won the Golden Globe for this role. And just when the industry expected him to become a star of big-budget productions, he announced his retirement to become a hip-hop artist.
It was all a hoax orchestrated together with Casey Affleck. The mockumentary I'm Still Here (2010) tested the patience of the press and of his own fans. Many thought his career was over after he appeared disheveled and erratic on television for months.
The industry didn't understand a thing.
Paul Thomas Anderson rescued him in 2012 for The Master. His portrayal of Freddie Quell is a physical study of post-traumatic stress that earned him the respect of his peers. In 2013 he switched gears with Her and proved he could carry a film built almost entirely on close-ups and dialogue with an artificial intelligence.
In 2019, he accepted the role of Arthur Fleck in Joker. For this shoot he lost 23 kilos of weight and studied videos of people with pathological laughter. The film grossed more than $1,000 million at the box office and finally earned him the Oscar for Best Actor.
In 2023, he worked with Ridley Scott again on Napoleon. That same year he starred in Beau Is Afraid with director Ari Aster in a shoot that lasted six months. Phoenix prefers directors who demand total physical commitment, even if that means filming risky scenes without stunt doubles.
In 2024, he premiered Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Lady Gaga. For 2025, he has the release of Eddington scheduled, where he collaborates again with Ari Aster in a cast that includes Pedro Pascal. Phoenix maintains his residence in Los Angeles and continues to turn down endorsement deals from major luxury brands.
