Ari Aster was born in New York in 1986 into a Jewish family where cinema was the center of everything. His first major impact didn't happen in a commercial theater but online. That experience shaped how he understood storytelling from the very beginning.
In 2011, he presented the short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons as his thesis for the AFI Conservatory. That story about reverse incest pushed the limits of what was acceptable and spread virally through specialized forums. It caught the industry's attention for his ability to unsettle audiences without relying on cheap jump scares.
And the gamble paid off.
Aster spent years polishing scripts that no one wanted to finance because of their extreme darkness. But his persistence helped him connect with the production company A24. That partnership changed his career forever, giving him a level of creative control that few young directors achieve in the American system.
In 2018, Hereditary hit theaters on a budget of 10 million dollars. The film grossed nearly 80 million and restored prestige to the most raw psychological horror. Aster wrote the screenplay based on a series of real tragedies that struck his own family during three years of creative drought.
He didn't want to make a conventional ghost movie. The goal was to portray an emotional collapse in which the supernatural works only as a symptom of a rotten inheritance. Toni Collette delivered a performance that is still studied in acting schools today for its raw physical pain.
But success didn't pin him down to a winning formula. In 2019, he shot Midsommar in Hungary, even though the story is set in Sweden. He swapped the darkness of closed houses for a blazing sunlight that left characters nowhere to hide. Florence Pugh led a cast that endured 12-hour shoots under a relentless sun to capture the group's genuine disorientation.
The film confirmed that Aster was no one-hit wonder. The director's cut runs 171 minutes. It's a work that ignores commercial pacing rules to sink into folklore and the anthropology of isolation.
It's the risk of total authorship.
In 2023, he released Beau Is Afraid with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. It was his most ambitious project and also his riskiest in terms of production. A24 invested 35 million dollars in a three-hour odyssey that blends dark comedy with pure surrealism.
Critics were sharply divided after the premiere. Some called it a twenty-first-century masterpiece, while others dismissed it as an unbearable exercise in self-indulgence. At the box office, it earned only 11 million dollars worldwide, marking his first major financial setback with mainstream audiences.
Despite the box office results, the industry didn't turn its back on him, because Aster had already founded his own production company, Square Peg. Through that platform, he finances projects by other directors, such as Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli. He understood that to survive in Hollywood, he also needed to take control of the business's administrative side.
In 2024, filming began on Eddington in New Mexico. It's a contemporary western with a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Pedro Pascal. The production relies on cinematographer Darius Khondji to capture the desert's aesthetic with lenses specific to the 1970s.
Filming of Eddington officially wrapped in May 2024 after seven weeks of shooting in desert locations.
