Emily Jean Stone convinced her parents with a PowerPoint presentation titled Project Hollywood in 2004. She was fifteen and had a determination that bordered on pathological. They moved to Los Angeles, and she began juggling auditions with a job at a dog bakery.
And the gamble paid off.
Her debut in Superbad (2007) was more than just a teen comedy. Director Judd Apatow suggested she dye her hair red, and that change in look defined her public image for a decade. But beneath the dye was an actress with a comic timing unusual for her age, one that recalled the great ladies of classic American comedy.
In 2010, Easy A hit theaters. It was the first time she carried the full weight of a commercial film. The script demanded a balance between sarcasm and vulnerability that few actresses of her generation could sustain. The movie grossed 75 million dollars on a minimal budget of eight million.
She earned her first Oscar nomination for Birdman in 2014. Alejandro González Iñárritu's shoot was a brutal technical boot camp because of its endless long takes. In that film, she learned to use her gaze to convey panic without saying a word.
Her ultimate victory came in 2017 with La La Land. That year, she earned 26 million dollars and became the highest-paid actress in the world, according to the Forbes list. But money didn't dictate her next moves, because she chose to move away from charming ingénue roles in pursuit of something darker.
Her collaboration with Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos took her career in a much more physical direction. In The Favourite (2018), she accepted a supporting role to explore cruelty and manipulation. She didn't mind coming across as unlikable on screen as long as the character had enough rough edges.
In 2023, she premiered Poor Things. Her performance as Bella Baxter took an exhausting physical toll and earned her second Oscar for Best Actress in 2024. Filming explicit sex scenes and playing a character with constant physical deformity was a statement of intent about her creative maturity.
She isn't chasing mainstream approval.
She prefers working with directors who push her to the limit of her endurance. In 2024, she reunited with Lanthimos for Kinds of Kindness, an anthology in which she plays three different characters. European critics praised her ability to inhabit strange worlds without losing the naturalness that defines her.
She founded her own production company, Fruit Tree, in 2020. She no longer just waits for scripts to land on her nightstand. She produces daring projects such as the series The Curse (2023), which explores social discomfort and marital failure from an almost unbearable angle for the average viewer.
In 2025, she is set to premiere Eddington under the direction of Ari Aster. It is a contemporary Western shot in New Mexico with a budget of over $35 million. She shares the poster with Joaquin Phoenix in a story that blends politics with noir.
Filming on Save the Green Planet is scheduled for late 2024. It is a remake of a Korean cult film about aliens and psychological torture. Stone keeps taking on projects where style takes a back seat to pure storytelling and acting risk.
Production on Eddington wrapped in May 2024 after months of work in extreme weather conditions.
