Marc Webb is not a director of slow motion or long silences. His narrative rhythm was forged among cables and amplifiers while he shot music videos for bands like Weezer and My Chemical Romance in the late nineties. Before moving into film, Webb already knew how to tell a story in exactly three minutes.
In 2009 500 Days of Summer hit theaters and changed how a whole generation saw the romantic comedy. It relied on no grand gimmicks, but on a nonlinear structure that resembled an emotional music video more than a classic Hollywood script. The film cost just 7 million dollars.
And the gamble paid off.
That debut grossed more than $60 million and put his name on the desks of major studios. Spanish critics praised his ability to avoid cheap sentimentality through a agile editing style and a musical selection that functioned as another character within the plot.
Sony Pictures handed him the keys to its most valuable franchise in 2012. Webb's selection to direct The Amazing Spider-Man surprised the industry, since his experience with big-budget productions was nil. The studio wanted a more human approach focused on the chemistry between its actors after the era of Sam Raimi.
He shot the first installment on a budget of $230 million. But the pressure of the numbers and the demands of the producers began to stifle his personal style. In 2014, he released the sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro, and the result was a clash between his intimate vision and the need to sell toys.
It was a hard blow.
Critics didn't forgive the excess of villains or the scattered plot. Even though the chemistry between the leads was obvious, the project for a third installment was definitively canceled. Webb then decided to step away from digital effects to regain control over his stories.
In 2017, he returned to his roots with Gifted. It was a modest production where he proved that his real talent lies in directing actors and in family dramas without artifice. That same year he released The Only Living Boy in New York, but the film went largely unnoticed by general audiences.
In the following years, Webb found in television a freer space to experiment. He directed episodes of series such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Why Women Kill, where he recovered some of the visual dynamism that made him famous in his early days. But the big contract came again from an office in Burbank.
Disney hired him to direct the live-action version of Snow White. Filming took place mainly at Pinewood Studios in the UK and suffered several delays due to the complexity of the visual effects. It is a production that exceeds $ 200 million in initial budget.
In 2024, he worked on the series Day Before Christmas for Hulu, aiming to balance his schedule between commercial films and episodic formats. The Snow White film has its worldwide release date set for March 2025.
