Clark Duke was born in Glenwood, Arkansas, in the mid-eighties. He never had the look of a conventional movie star, but he knew how to use his physique to build a comedic style based on awkwardness. His entry into the industry didn't come through the front door of the studios.
In 2007, he created the web series Clark and Michael with Michael Cera. It was an almost amateur project in which they played themselves looking for work in Hollywood. The natural dialogue caught the attention of producers searching for fresh faces for generational comedy.
And then the phone started ringing.
He had a brief role in Superbad that same year. It was a tiny appearance, but it helped him get into the circle of Judd Apatow. At that time, that group of actors controlled nearly all of American studio comedy.
In 2008, he landed his first leading role in Sex Drive. The film followed the formulas of the raunchy comedies of the time. But Duke brought a much more laid-back tone than his co-stars. His cynical know-it-all character became a recurring trait in his later work.
He starred in Kick-Ass in 2010 under the direction of Matthew Vaughn. He played Marty, one of the hero's best friends. The film was a critical and box office hit that allowed the actor to diversify his projects toward action comedy.
That same year, he released Hot Tub Time Machine. He shared the screen with John Cusack and Craig Robinson in a time-travel story. The chemistry with Robinson was so obvious that they reunited for the sequel in 2015.
Not everything was mainstream comedy.
In 2012, he joined the cast of The Office for its ninth season. He played Clark Green, an intern trying to climb the ranks at the paper company. It was a tough challenge because the show was already in its final stretch and audiences were very demanding of new additions.
His career took a turn toward full authorship in 2020. Duke wrote and directed his first feature film, Arkansas. It is a story about low-level drug dealers moving through the American South. He persuaded actors of the caliber of John Malkovich to take supporting roles.
The production had a tight budget and an intense shoot on real locations. But the final result revealed a much darker and more violent side of him that nobody expected. The screenplay adapted a novel by John Brandon with a very distinct chapter structure.
In 2021, he lent his voice to the Netflix animated series Inside Job. He played Brett Hand, a character who parodied American corporate culture. The series was canceled after two seasons despite strong initial reviews.
The shoot of his debut feature lasted exactly 32 days.
