Liv Tyler did not know who her biological father was until she turned nine. She looked at a poster of Steven Tyler and realized that the physical resemblance could not be a genetic coincidence. Her mother, model Bebe Buell, had kept the secret to shield her from the chaos and addictions surrounding the Aerosmith frontman in the 1970s.
That discovery changed her identity and her last name overnight.
She got into movies almost by accident after a brief stint on the fashion runways. In 1994, she starred in the music video for the song Crazy, and her face ended up on the notebooks of millions of teenagers. But industry respect came when Bernardo Bertolucci cast her in Stealing Beauty in 1996.
The Italian director was looking for a mix of absolute innocence and premature maturity. And he found it in a young woman who barely understood how European film sets worked. The film was a critical success that freed her from the stigma of being just the daughter of a rock star.
Hollywood quickly moved to exploit her image of ethereal beauty in massive-scale projects. In 1998, she headlined the cast of Armageddon alongside Bruce Willis. The film grossed $553 million and placed her at the center of the global blockbuster market.
But the project that defined her professional career was the The Lord of the Rings trilogy between 2001 and 2003. Peter Jackson cast her to bring Arwen to life, and Tyler had to learn to speak Elvish while filming in the landscapes of New Zealand. That experience lasted years and demanded a level of physical commitment she had never experienced before.
It was her period of greatest media exposure.
Many analysts expected her to ride that momentum into leading roles in major romantic comedies. But she preferred more low-key projects or genre films such as The Strangers in 2008. That psychological horror film proved she could sustain dramatic tension with very little dialogue and a modest budget.
As she matured, the actress found better opportunities in episodic formats. In 2014, she took a role in The Leftovers, playing a woman who joins a silent cult after a global disappearance. It was a risky choice because it broke away from her image as a traditional romantic heroine.
In 2017, she moved to London to shoot Harlots, and shortly after joined the action series 9-1-1: Lone Star in 2020. She left the production due to logistical difficulties traveling between the United Kingdom and the United States during the international travel restrictions of that period.
And the bet on silence paid off.
After a long break from the major franchises, she returned to the superhero universe. In 2024, she finished filming Captain America: Brave New World to reprise the role of Betty Ross, which she had first played in 2008. The production of this film had an estimated budget of $200 million.
