Charlie McDermott was sixteen when he showed up at the New York–Canada border to shoot one of the rawest films in American independent cinema. In 2008, the Sundance premiere of Frozen River earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards. This Pennsylvania kid wasn't after teen magazine covers. His performance as T.J. Eddy showed a dry maturity that caught the attention of casting directors across the country.
And the gamble paid off.
Before he turned twenty, he had already worked with M. Night Shyamalan in The Village and starred in the raunchy comedy Sex Drive. But his life changed with a long-term television contract. In 2009, he signed on to play the eldest Heck son in the ABC series The Middle. What seemed like a job lasting a couple of years turned into a routine that lasted nearly a decade.
Two hundred and fifteen episodes later, Charlie McDermott was a recognizable face around the world.
Axl Heck was not Charlie.
While his character spent his days in his underwear eating pizza, the actor spent his free hours studying camera technique. In 2017, he was tapped to direct the episode titled Confirm or Deny. It was his first real chance to manage a national television budget. So he used the experience to fund his own personal projects, far from the Hollywood spotlight.
Because the actor always kept one foot outside the mainstream industry.
In 2018, he wrote and directed the short film Layla with Sara Rejaie. The project grew out of the need to shoot without the restrictions of major studios. They weren't seeking mass distribution or flashy awards. They simply wanted to explore a slow, almost contemplative visual narrative that clashed head-on with the frantic pace of the sitcom.
In 2019, he appeared in the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable and in three episodes of Future Man. These were his last high-profile roles before he focused on his music career. Under the name Cosmo, he released the album Glowigust in 2020. It's a psychedelic folk record on which he plays every instrument and handles the final mix himself. Creative independence became his only priority.
He moved to New Zealand to escape the media noise of California. In 2021, he contributed to the soundtrack of several independent digital projects without being credited under his real name in the main credits. His obsession with analog sound led him to buy 1970s recording equipment for his private studio.
In 2024, he still lives in Australia, working on audio post-production for experimental film.
