Brendan Gleeson spent ten years teaching language and literature at a high school in Dublin. He wasn't the kind of actor who chases fame in his twenties. But amateur theater got under his skin, and by the time he was thirty-four he had traded the chalk for scripts.
In 1990 he made his debut with a brief role in The Field, and that's where it all began. His rugged build and weary gaze quickly caught the attention of casting directors. And the bet paid off.
His teaching days were over for good.
Mel Gibson gave him his big break in 1995 with Braveheart. He played Hamish, and his physical presence was undeniable. But it was John Boorman who gave him his first major challenge in The General in 1998. He won the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Best Actor, and the industry realized Gleeson was much more than a supporting player.
He made a real-life criminal into a charismatic character, and that threw the doors of Hollywood wide open for him. He worked with Steven Spielberg on A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) and with Martin Scorsese on Gangs of New York (2002). His ability to fill the screen without saying a word was rare among his generation.
In 2008 he shot In Bruges under Martin McDonagh's direction. That script changed his career. He formed an odd pairing with Colin Farrell, and the mix of violence and dry humor became his signature. Gleeson handles silence better than shouting.
The risk was total.
They revisited the formula years later, in 2022, with The Banshees of Inisherin. The role earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He played a musician who decides, from one day to the next, to stop speaking to his best friend. It was a restrained, powerful performance that confirmed his standing in the global industry.
But his career wasn't built on independent films alone. His entry into the Harry Potter franchise in 2005 as Alastor Moody brought him the global fame he hadn't sought. He earned big paychecks, which allowed him to choose smaller, independent projects in the years that followed.
Gleeson was never a conventional method actor.
In 2009 he won an Emmy for playing Winston Churchill in Into the Storm. He managed to humanize a politician that other actors had reduced to a caricature. His Churchill was equal parts vulnerable and stubborn. Critics were won over completely.
He kept working with the McDonagh family, this time with John Michael, Martin's brother. In 2011 he starred in The Guard, and in 2014 in the film Calvary. In the latter he played a priest who receives a death threat in the confessional. It was the most spiritual role of his career and the one that best used his face of a wounded giant.
In 2024 he appeared in the film Joker: Folie à Deux under the direction of Todd Phillips. His schedule for 2025 includes filming the series Spider-Noir in Los Angeles. In this production he plays a New York mob boss in the 1930s.
