The electrician who didn't want wires

Liam Cunningham was not born with a calling to act. In the mid-1980s, he worked as an electrician at a safari park in Zimbabwe, and his future seemed tied to switchboards and industrial wiring. Back in Dublin, he saw an ad for a drama school and decided to try his luck because he was bored by the technical routine. He was already in his twenties when he first stepped onto the stage.

And he decided he never wanted to touch a cable again.

His training was purely hands-on and far from the spotlight of London or Los Angeles. In 1995 he landed a role in A Little Princess under the direction of Alfonso Cuarón, and that experience taught him that his face suited sober drama better than light comedy. His tough look and deep voice allowed him to move between independent productions and major studios without losing an ounce of credibility.

In 2006, he worked with Ken Loach on The Wind That Shakes the Barley. That film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and cemented his standing as a character actor in European cinema. Cunningham played a train conductor caught up in the Irish struggle for independence, and his presence brought a authenticity that few method actors managed to convey on screen.

Arriving in the Seven Kingdoms

Despite a solid career in British film, his global recognition came from a television gamble that seemed risky at the time. In 2012, he joined the cast of Game of Thrones to bring Davos Seaworth to life. The character was a former smuggler who became the right-hand man to kings, and his performance relied on restraint and a honesty that contrasted with the violence elsewhere in the plot.

The role of Davos Seaworth changed the game.

Cunningham devoted seven full seasons to this project and became one of the few actors to last until the series finale in 2019. During those years, he turned down offers that would have typecast him as a medieval warrior. He preferred to wait for scripts with denser political or social weight, because he has always seen acting as a tool for communication and not just entertainment.

In 2021, he was part of the cast of The Vault (also known as The Vault), a big-budget production shot in Madrid under the direction of Jaume Balagueró. He played the mastermind behind a heist on the Bank of Spain, and his involvement was key in giving an international feel to a film that aimed to compete directly with Hollywood standards. But his relationship with the great television creators didn't end with the dragons.

Science fiction and gritty realism

The creators of the HBO series called him back for an even bigger challenge. In 2024, he premiered in 3 Body Problem on Netflix, playing Thomas Wade. The character is a relentless intelligence chief who must manage Earth's defense against an imminent alien threat. It's a role that demands absolute coolness, and Cunningham pulls it off without big gestures or shouting.

There was no turning back.

Off set, he leads a low-key life in Dublin with his wife and three children. He only walks the red carpet when his contract requires it, and he prefers to spend his time in his workshop or traveling to conflict zones to support humanitarian organizations. In 2016 he visited refugee camps in Greece with World Vision and used his visibility to draw attention to the plight of Syrian families.

His career is defined by consistency rather than sudden spikes in fame. In 2023, he appeared in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a gothic horror film in which he played the captain of a doomed ship. Filming at the Berlin studios took ten weeks of night shoots in artificial rain and subzero temperatures.

Cunningham currently lives in a house in south Dublin that he bought with his first major paycheck in the 1990s.
