The thinness of success

Adrien Brody weighed less than 60 kilos when they arrived on the set of The Pianist in 2002. To get into the skin of Wladyslaw Szpilman, he did not just study music for four hours a day. He sold his car, left his apartment in New York and cut himself off from the world to understand what it means to lose everything.

That obsession with method earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor at just 29 years old. At the 2003 ceremony, he unexpectedly kissed Halle Berry, breaking the protocol of an industry that tends to reward veterans with gray hair. He remained the youngest winner in the category until then.

It was an all-or-nothing gamble.

But the glory of the statuette brought strange choices. Instead of chaining together prestige dramas, he preferred to try his luck in commercial action cinema. In 2005, he shot King Kong under the direction of Peter Jackson, and in 2010 he led the return of the Predators franchise.

Many critics in Spain did not understand that change of register. The actor was trying to escape being typecast as a war victim, but audiences still saw in his aquiline nose and sad gaze a fragility that was hard to fit into an action-packed movie.

The Writers' Retreat

Brody's career found a safe harbor in the symmetry of Wes Anderson. In 2007, he appeared in The Darjeeling Limited and has since become a recurring presence in the Texan director's universe. His gift for dry comedy and elegant pathos worked in The Grand Budapest Hotel from 2014.

Unlike other actors of his generation, Brody isn't afraid of supporting roles if the script has edge. In 2011, he played Salvador Dalí in Midnight in Paris under the direction of Woody Allen. He needed only a couple of scenes to capture the energy of the Catalan painter.

Brody is an actor of silences.

That restraint helped him break into quality television. In 2017, he joined the fourth season of Peaky Blinders as Luca Changretta. His presence on the British series brought a sense of mafia menace that contrasted with the coldness of the Shelbys.

The actor has always preferred characters who carry obvious trauma. In 2022, he played basketball legend Pat Riley in the series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. For the role, he had to study the coach's technical gestures and the pressure of a city like Los Angeles in the 1980s.

A return to physical cinema

His relationship with fashion and painting has also shaped the way he chooses projects. Brody has been painting for years and exhibits his work at international art fairs. That aesthetic sensibility shows in his work on Asteroid City from 2023, where he once again plays with meticulously precise staging.

In 2024, he premiered The Brutalist at the Venice Film Festival. Directed by Brady Corbet, the film follows a Hungarian architect who survives the Holocaust and tries to rebuild his life in the United States. International critics called his performance the best of the last two decades.

Brody seems to have come full circle professionally. He once again plays a European survivor in a physically grueling role. For this shoot, the actor spent months studying mid-century architecture treatises and practicing a specific accent that would avoid caricature.

The project was shot in 70mm VistaVision format and has a total runtime of 215 minutes.
