Rian Johnson shot his first movie with $450,000 saved up and the support of his family. He was 2005, and Brick was filmed at San Clemente High School, where he had studied years earlier. The film blended the language of the film noir of the 40s with the high-school drama of a California campus.
And the gamble paid off.
That debut won a special jury prize at Sundance for its visual originality. Johnson showed he could shoot a complex plot with minimal resources and a precision edit that he executed himself on his personal computer. But the path to big productions was not a straight one.
After the release of Brick, Johnson spent three years looking for funding for his next project. In 2008 he released The Brothers Bloom, a con-artist comedy that failed to make the impact he had hoped for at the box office despite an international cast. Critics began to wonder whether this young director was just a passing spark in independent film.
The answer came with science fiction.
In 2012 he released Looper, and the industry realized Johnson handled the mechanics of the genre with almost mathematical precision. The movie grossed $176 million on a budget of $30 million. It was during that shoot that he forged a creative partnership with Joseph Gordon-Levitt that continues across nearly all of his work, through cameos or leading roles.
In 2017, the director took charge of The Last Jedi within the Star Wars franchise. It was his most divisive project. Johnson chose to break with fan expectations and proposed a storyline in which the past had to die for the story to move forward. The decision sparked heated debate on social media for years.
Because Johnson understands that audiences are smarter than Hollywood usually gives them credit for.
Despite complaints from some audiences, the movie was a massive financial success. In 2017, the film's worldwide box office reached $1,333 million. That figure gave him complete leverage to negotiate his next contracts without interference from the major traditional studios.
But the real turning point in his career would come with a mansion and a board game.
In 2019, he revived the whodunit genre with Knives Out. The film recaptured the spirit of Agatha Christie but set it in a contemporary America full of class tensions and poisonous inheritances. The screenplay earned him an Oscar nomination and caught the interest of the most powerful streaming platforms.
In 2021, Johnson and his producer Ram Bergman signed a deal with Netflix worth $450 million. The contract covered the rights to two sequels centered on detective Benoit Blanc. The move changed the game for auteur directors seeking blockbuster budgets outside the superhero franchise system.
So in 2022 he traveled to Greece to shoot Glass Onion. The production had a superior technical setup and a cast that included Edward Norton and Janelle Monáe. Johnson used the success to found his own production company, T-Street, through which he began developing projects for other directors and television series.
In 2023, he made the leap to episodic television with Poker Face. The series revived the case-of-the-week mystery format that thrived in the 70s with shows like Columbo. The structure of each episode let Johnson experiment with different visual and narrative tones without the weight of a heavy overarching plot.
In 2025, the director scheduled the release of Wake Up Dead Man, the third installment in his detective series. Filming took place in London using Panavision Millennium DXL2 cameras with custom lenses to achieve a very specific depth of field in the period interiors.
