The national television powerhouse

Elsa Lafuente Medianu decided her career needed the sound of a Central European surname before anyone knew who she was. She adopted the Pataky name from her maternal grandmother and set out for Madrid in the late nineties. In 1997, she joined the cast of Al salir de clase, and that series became an endless talent pool of fresh faces for the Spanish industry.

Television was the perfect training ground.

She left the series after nearly two hundred episodes to try her luck in genre films. She appeared in El arte de morir in 2000 and in Romasanta in 2004. But it was José Luis Garci who gave her her first major leading role in Ninette in 2005. That performance as a young Parisian woman broke the mold of the polished, ornamental actress the press had pinned on her until then.

In 2006, she decided Spain was too small for her. She packed her bags and moved to Los Angeles to start from scratch at auditions where no one knew her previous work. She landed a small role in Snakes on a Plane that same year and realized the road in the United States would be slow.

The Assault on Major Franchises

The American industry is a meat grinder, but she kept up with the casting calls. In 2011, she joined the Fast & Furious franchise as Elena Neves. That fifth installment brought in more than 600 million dollars worldwide and gave her the global visibility she was after.

And then Hollywood came calling.

She reprised her role in the next three films in the franchise, shot between 2013 and 2017. During that time, she balanced big-budget productions with smaller European projects such as Di Di Hollywood by Bigas Luna in 2010. The film aimed to be a scathing critique of the star system, but its commercial reception was icy.

In 2010, she married Chris Hemsworth, and that decision changed her professional geography. The couple moved to Byron Bay, Australia, for 2014 to get away from the media pressure of California. The move meant a voluntary break from her filming schedule to focus on raising their three children.

Life in the Australian desert

After several years focused on advertising projects and a wellness-centered lifestyle, she returned to physical action roles. In 2022, she starred in Interceptor for Netflix. She had to undergo four months of military training to play a captain in the U.S. Army.

Box office was king.

That same year, she appeared in Poker Face under the direction of Russell Crowe. In 2024, George Miller called her to join Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where she played two different characters. One of them required facial prosthetics that made her completely unrecognizable among the other warriors of the wasteland.

The production of Interceptor reached 50 million viewing hours during its first week in the catalog. The film's budget was estimated at 15 million dollars.
