In 1998, Luis Tosar juggled and performed mime routines in the squares of Galicia while fighting for supporting roles on regional television. He was twenty-seven, with bushy eyebrows and a deep, gravelly voice that threw casting directors in Madrid off balance. No one saw in that kid from Cospeito the future pillar of the country's big screens.

Icíar Bollaín changed the game when she cast him in Even the Rain in 1999. The Galician actor played a silent farmer and suddenly made a splash at the Goya Awards as a breakout acting contender.

And the gamble paid off.

The Domestic Monster and an Awards Harvest

In 2002 he landed the role of Jose in Mondays in the Sun, directed by Fernando León de Aranoa. Tosar built an unemployed shipyard worker who chews on rage with every drink at the tavern. The Academy gave him his first Goya for Best Supporting Actor in 2003 by a landslide vote.

But the definitive breakthrough came that same year with Bollaín's Take My Eyes. Playing Antonio, an everyday abuser trying to rehabilitate himself without escaping his own violence, demanded a meticulous balance to avoid the cliché.

During rehearsals the actor worked with therapists and abusers to decode the psychological mechanisms of marital submission. That drama grossed five million euros at the box office and earned him the Silver Shell at the San Sebastián Festival, along with his second Academy award.

Because Tosar never needed to raise his voice to dominate the screen.

Malamadre and the Business of Violence

The audience didn't blink.

The film grossed over 13 million euros at the box office and won eight Goya Awards, including his third personal Goya for the actor from Lugo. That performance changed how producers saw him: they recognized in his face a guarantee of returns for action cinema.

In 2011 Jaume Balagueró explored that dark register in Sleep Tight, where he played a building concierge obsessed with destroying the lives of his neighbors. The shoot in Barcelona was exhausting because of summer temperatures inside a real building, but the feature grossed four million euros outside Spain.

The Gears of Industrial Suspense

In the years that followed, his name became tied to the machinery of crime cinema. In 2015 he starred in The Stranger, trapped inside a vehicle loaded with explosives, and in 2016 he repeated the box office success in Hundred Years of Forgiveness alongside Daniel Calparsoro.

So production directors turned to his reliability to secure the finances of commercial action cinema. In 2021 he alternated the blockbuster The Vault, financed by Telecinco Cinema with a budget of fifteen million euros, with the political drama Maixabel, in which he played ETA member Ibon Etxezarreta.

In 2024 he headlined The Infiltrator alongside Carolina Yuste under the direction of Arantxa Echevarría, drawing more than one million moviegoers to commercial theaters before releasing Blows in 2025 under the direction of Rafael Cobos.

In 2026 he completed the seventy shooting days of the series Salvador for Netflix, an eight-episode thriller with a budget of ten million euros and locations spread between Madrid and the Basque Country.
