Luis Zahera doesn't act with his face but with his gums. In Galicia, everyone knew him as Petróleo in the series Mareas vivas in the late 1990s. But the rest of the country took a while to realize that this hyperactive guy was the best supporting actor of his generation.
And he got it through sheer exhaustion.
He was born in Santiago de Compostela in 1966 and spent years grinding away in regional theater before film took him seriously. His electric presence got him typecast for a while as criminals or unhinged characters. Before shooting, he reads the script looking for the nerve of the scene because he hates stillness on screen.
In 2009, he landed the role that broke his glass ceiling. He played Releches in Celda 211, and suddenly his name started turning up in offices in Madrid. It wasn't a big part, but the way he stared into the camera unsettled audiences in a new way.
He won his first Goya in 2019 for El reino. In that film, he has only a few minutes on screen on a balcony, but he stole the spotlight from the rest of the cast with a monologue about corruption that is still studied in acting schools. From that moment on, his phone didn't stop ringing.
Rodrigo Sorogoyen knew how to tap into his energy like no one else. In 2022, The Beasts premiered, and Zahera transformed into Xan. He plays a neighbor from deep rural Galicia who chews on hatred with a chilling calm. That role earned him his second Goya for Best Supporting Actor in 2023.
The industry wanted screams, and he delivered silence.
But his career is not limited to constant tension. In 2024 he starred in Pájaros alongside Javier Gutiérrez. It was a shift toward tenderness that few expected from an actor so associated with physical violence in his earlier projects.
He moves between film and mainstream commercial television. Between 2022 and 2024, he played Ezequiel in the series Entrevías. There, he showed he can carry the weight of a high-rating production without losing the raw edge that has defined him since his early days in Galician regional television.
He prefers short shoots because they let him move from one celebrity to another without getting stuck. He often says his job is not to bother the lead, but he ends up stealing every shot he appears in. His physical presence is a life insurance policy for any casting director in Spain.
The contract for The Beasts specified that the shoot in the village of Sabucedo should last just a few weeks to make the most of the natural winter light in Galicia.
