Ana de Armas landed in Madrid in 2006 with two hundred euros in her pocket and a Spanish passport that served as her ticket out. She was eighteen years old. She left behind a Cuba where she had already shot A Rose from France, but where the glass ceiling was made of reinforced concrete. She wasn't after fame, only a job opportunity that didn't depend on the power cuts.
She landed the role of Carolina Leal in El Internado just one week after arriving. The Antena 3 series became a mass phenomenon that followed her through school binders and teen magazines for six seasons. It was a gilded cage.
And she decided to break it.
In 2010, she wrapped up her work on the series and looked for projects that would move her away from the image of a high school student. She took part in Sex, Party and Lies, a movie that did well at the box office but received fierce criticism for its portrayal of young people. She knew the Spanish market was starting to feel too small for her ambitions.
In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles without speaking fluent English. She signed up for intensive classes seven hours a day because she refused to play only the stereotypical Latina girl. Her first role in the United States was in Knock Knock, directed by Eli Roth in 2015. She shared the screen with Keanu Reeves while learning her lines phonetically.
But the real shift in how audiences saw her came with Blade Runner 2049 in 2017. Denis Villeneuve chose her to play Joi, an artificial intelligence she gave an unexpected humanity to in a $150 million blockbuster. It was the moment the industry realized her gaze could fill the screen on its own.
The industry did not expect that move.
So she began receiving scripts where the character's ethnic origin was not the engine of the story. In 2019, she played Marta Cabrera in Knives Out. The script for Rian Johnson demanded a restraint that contrasted with the histrionics of the rest of the cast. She earned her first Golden Globe nomination and carried the weight of an ensemble plot alongside names like Christopher Plummer and Daniel Craig.
Andrew Dominik spent years getting Blonde off the ground. In 2022, the film arrived on Netflix after a grueling physical and psychological shoot that lasted months. Armas immersed herself in Norma Jeane to such an extent that international critics forgot her accent from Santa Cruz del Norte.
She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 2023. She was the first Cuban woman to be considered for this honor in the main category at the Hollywood Academy Awards.
The bet on risk was total.
For 2024, she worked intensely on the post-production of Ballerina, the first major spin-off of the John Wick franchise. The film was shot mainly in Prague and required four months of combat training for the real action scenes. At this stage of her career, she prefers to get involved in executive producing to keep control over the tone of her projects.
The contract for this production included a clause giving her direct oversight of the high-risk sequences and the final edit.
