He arrived on the River Thames in a speedboat in October 2005. He wore an orange life vest and hair that was too blond for spy-movie purists. London's tabloids mocked his looks and his supposed lack of charisma before he had shot a single minute of footage.
But Daniel Craig already knew what it was like to work from the margins.
He grew up in the northwest of England and trained at the National Youth Theatre. In 1996, the series Our Friends in the North gave him his first real break in British television. He played a troubled young man in a story that spanned decades of social history. That role proved that his strength didn't lie in posing, but in a brooding stare that made viewers uneasy.
And the gamble paid off.
Before inheriting the tuxedo, he took on projects that defined his dry, direct style. In 2002 he played Paul Newman's psychopathic son in Road to Perdition. Two years later he starred in Layer Cake under Matthew Vaughn. That gangster film convinced the producers of the 007 franchise that they needed a change of direction.
In 2006, the release of Casino Royale silenced the critics overnight. Audiences saw a bleeding, suffering agent who didn't need absurd gadgets to survive a poker game. The film grossed over $600 million, and the actor signed on for a run that would last fifteen years.
Filming these blockbusters was no easy road. While shooting Quantum of Solace in 2008, he suffered deep facial cuts and lost the tip of a finger. In 2015 he broke his knee while filming Spectre, but he decided to press on so as not to halt the schedule of production company Eon Productions.
That physical demand eventually wore down his relationship with the character. In a 2015 interview, he said he would rather slit his wrists than play the spy again. But he returned one last time in 2021 with No Time to Die to close a narrative arc that no other actor in the franchise had ever had.
His run in the franchise changed the financial rules of the game in Hollywood.
Away from the spy suit, he sought out projects that broke with his tough, silent image. In 2011 he worked with David Fincher on the adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In 2017 he surprised audiences with an eccentric, comedic role in Logan Lucky, directed by Steven Soderbergh.
In 2019, the character Benoit Blanc was born in Knives Out. This collaboration with director Rian Johnson allowed him to explore an exaggerated Southern accent and a physicality that had nothing to do with the restraint of his earlier work. The success of the first film led Netflix to buy the rights to the sequels for a record sum.
Because his market value didn't drop after giving up his license to kill.
In 2024 he starred in Queer under the direction of Luca Guadagnino. He played a vulnerable, obsessive man in 1940s Mexico. The film moved far away from commercial structures to focus on the psychology of an American expatriate.
His schedule for 2025 includes filming Wake Up Dead Man at various locations across Europe. He lives in New York with his wife Rachel Weisz, whom he married in a private ceremony in 2011. The contract he signed with the streaming platform for the mystery trilogy was closed at a total of $100 million.
