Rachel Weisz grew up in a London home where intellect mattered more than appearances. The daughter of a Hungarian inventor and an Austrian psychotherapist, her education at Cambridge set the pace for what came next. At university she founded an experimental theater company called Talking Tongues and won an award at the Edinburgh Festival.
It was a purely academic decision.
She turned down a leading role opposite Richard Gere while she was still a student because she preferred to finish her literature exams. That resistance to the easy glamour of the film studios defined her early years in the British industry. In 1996, Bernardo Bertolucci cast her in Stealing Beauty, and the world discovered that her gaze worked just as well on film as it did on the stage.
And then came the special effects blockbusters.
In 1999, the release of The Mummy made her a global face overnight. But Weisz was not comfortable in the role of the damsel in distress who just runs away from explosions. She accepted the sequel in 2001 out of contractual obligation, but declined to take part in the third installment years later. Her priority has always been creative control over her own public image.
Her true transformation came in 2005 with the shoot of The Constant Gardener. Playing Tessa Abbott allowed her to explore a political vulnerability that no one had demanded of her on screen until then. In 2006 she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and that award gave her the freedom to turn down the more commercial offers from Los Angeles.
The industry viewed her with suspicion.
But she preferred to work with directors who wanted more than a pretty face for the poster. In 2009, she starred in Agora under Alejandro Amenábar, playing Hypatia of Alexandria. The shoot in Malta was grueling, and the film had a divisive box office reception. Still, the project showed that Weisz preferred historical risk to guaranteed success.
In 2011, she married Daniel Craig in a private ceremony with only four guests. She has always kept an impenetrable wall between her life in New York and her work on film sets. For her, fame is an annoying side effect of a profession she loves above all else.
With maturity came the desire to create her own stories. In 2017, she produced and starred in Disobedience, a film that explores forbidden desire within an Orthodox Jewish community in London. It was a personal project that took years to get off the ground. That same year, she shot The Favourite with Yorgos Lanthimos.
And the bet on the Greek filmmaker paid off.
In 2018, her performance as Lady Sarah Churchill earned her another Oscar nomination and a BAFTA Award. The film's sharp, cruel tone matched her talent for delivering biting dialogue without blinking. Following this success, she entered the Marvel universe in 2021 with Black Widow, playing a Russian scientist with twisted maternal nuances.
In 2023, she made her move to prestige television with the series The Lost Daughter. Not only did she star as twin sisters with a codependent relationship, but she also served as executive producer of the entire show. Filming the double scenes required a technical effort that meant every take had to be repeated for months to match both characters' gazes.
The series' production in 2023 had an estimated cost of $120 million.
