Carlos Elejalde Garay learned to run cables before he memorized a stage script. In Vitoria, he studied to become an electrician while writing lyrics in Basque for punk rock bands such as Hertzainak and Korroskada. Mandatory military service changed his path when he met actor Toño Sampedro, who recruited him into street-style, combative theater productions.
During the 1980s, he performed on stages across the Basque Country with independent bands such as Klacatrak and Samaniego. That van-and-trench school gave him a sturdy physique and a very recognizable, cavernous voice.
In 1987 he made his screen debut in A los cuatro vientos by José Antonio Zorrilla. But his breakthrough came with the emergence of a new wave of Basque directors in the first half of the 1990s. Juanma Bajo Ulloa cast him in the drama Alas de mariposa and later in the suffocating La madre muerta, where he played a relentless killer.
Around the same time, Julio Medem cast him in Vacas and La ardilla roja. Álex de la Iglesia gave him the role of the space gunslinger Manolo in Acción mutante. In that era of visceral, baroque cinema, Elejalde was the perfect embodiment of contained fury and audacity.
That wild 1990s Spanish cinema would not be understood without his clenched jaw.
In 1997, he co-wrote Airbag with Juanma Bajo Ulloa, a raucous comedy structured as a frantic chase through brothels and back roads. Elejalde took on the role of Juantxo, the timid fiancé who loses his engagement ring at a nightclub.
The film set the box office on fire: more than two million moviegoers came through the theaters, and the movie grossed close to a billion pesetas. It was a popular earthquake that embedded whole lines in the everyday speech of an entire generation.
Encouraged by such popular appeal, he decided to try his luck as a director. In 1999, he co-directed the comedy Año mariano alongside Fernando Guillén Cuervo, with both also sharing writing and acting duties. The numbers held up once again, and the irreverent humor formula worked well with mainstream audiences.
But in 2004, his solo venture Torapia ended in disaster. The caper comedy about diamonds and madhouses received scathing reviews and a frosty reception at the box office.
And the commercial flop abruptly put his plans as a director on hold.
So Karra set down the director's chair and returned to the one place nobody could take potshots at him: pure, hard-core acting. For about five years he alternated roles in films such as Timecrimes by Nacho Vigalondo and episodic appearances in low-profile productions, building up his craft and waiting for material worthy of his screen presence.
In 2010, Icíar Bollaín gave him a dual role in También la lluvia: Antón, a veteran alcoholic actor, and Christopher Columbus during the film's shoot in Bolivia. That restrained performance earned him his first Goya Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Four years later, Emilio Martínez-Lázaro cast him as Koldo in Ocho apellidos vascos. His fisherman from Bermeo, gruff on the surface and tender at heart, served as the emotional anchor of a comedy that shattered every known box-office record for Spanish cinema, grossing over 56 million euros. Elejalde won his second Goya for Best Supporting Actor in 2015.
Massive success often typecasts actors in a single register. But Elejalde sidestepped the trap by immediately choosing the Galician drama A Esmorga by Ignacio Vilar and the film 100 Meters alongside Dani Rovira.
In 2019, Alejandro Amenábar cast him as Miguel de Unamuno in Mientras dure la guerra. The technical challenge required four hours of daily makeup sessions and toning down his usual volcanic energy to capture the contradictions of a wise old man overwhelmed by the Spanish Civil War. His performance in the dialectical clash at the University of Salamanca's great hall against General Millán-Astray earned unanimous praise from critics.
In 2022 he won the Silver Spike for Best Actor at the Valladolid Film Festival for his work in Vasil, the debut feature by Avelina Prat, in which he played a retiree who loves chess. That same year he released the culinary comedy La vida padre and shot the social fable Kepler Sexto B, directed by Alejandro Suárez Lozano.
In 2024, he made the leap to series with Segunda muerte, a six-episode production shot in the Pas Valley in Cantabria. There he played Tello, a former Civil Guard agent sidelined by the early stages of senile dementia while his daughter investigates a corpse in a remote cabin.
In 2025, filming wrapped on Tierra de nadie, directed by Albert Pintó, sharing the bill with Luis Zahera in a crime story set in the province of Cádiz with a production budget of three million euros.
