Maria de Medeiros lives on the border between auteur cinema and mass culture. Born in Lisbon in 1965, she grew up surrounded by music and literature in a family of artists. Her talent for languages allowed her to move from the French theater stage to the major Los Angeles studios without losing her European identity.
She is the permanent exception to continental cinema.
In 1990 she played Anaïs Nin in Henry & June, and her face instantly became known worldwide. It was the first film to receive the NC-17 rating in the United States (a fact that always accompanies her biography), but she chose to keep working with filmmakers such as Bigas Luna and Manoel de Oliveira. The American film industry never managed to tame her schedule.
Quentin Tarantino cast her as Fabienne in Pulp Fiction in 1994. That role as a fragile yet stubborn girlfriend gave her a level of visibility that few Portuguese actresses have reached in the history of modern cinema. But Medeiros decided her path lay behind the camera, in projects with a clear political edge.
And so her feature directorial debut arrived.
In 2000 she released Capitães de Abril, a film recounting the Carnation Revolution. It was an ambitious production that cost close to four million euros and featured an extensive international cast. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and confirmed that her interest in Portuguese history outweighed any temptation toward Hollywood stardom.
Music has always been her parallel refuge. In 2007 she released A Little More Blue, covering great Brazilian songwriters with a voice that avoids technical artifice. For her, singing is another way of telling stories, free from the pressure of a film set.
In 2016, she appeared in the Spanish film 100 metros alongside Dani Rovira. Her presence in Spanish cinema has been steady since the 1990s, when she worked on Huevos de oro. Medeiros moves across the continent with the ease of someone who doesn't need a passport.
Her work as a director continued with the feature film Aos Nossos Filhos in 2019. The film explores new family structures and was shot entirely in Brazil. It had its commercial release in Spain in 2022, after making the rounds at several specialized festivals.
But her work doesn't stop at directing.
In 2020 she starred in Ordem Moral by Mario Barroso. She played Maria Adelaide Coelho da Cunha in a period drama that demanded absolute restraint in front of the camera. The shoot took place at historic locations in Portugal, on a modest budget supported by ICA state grants.
The production of Aos Nossos Filhos featured the French company Epicentre Films and the Brazilian Bossa Nova Films.
