Uma Karuna Thurman stands 1.80 tall, which shaped her beginnings in the 1980s. At fifteen, she left school to make her own way in New York. Before becoming an actress, she worked as a dishwasher while trying to get into modeling agencies. But film called her quickly, because her face did not fit the usual beauty standards of the time.
In 1987, she made her debut in the thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight. It was a low-key entrance into an industry that did not quite know where to place a woman so tall with such sharp features. So she took supporting roles in productions such as The Adventures of Baron Munchausen in 1988.
And her luck changed.
That same year, she played Cécile de Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons. She shared the screen with John Malkovich and Glenn Close. Critics noticed her ability to convey a mix of innocence and wickedness. That role opened the doors of major California studios to her by the end of the decade.
Quentin Tarantino saw her and decided she was the only option for Mia Wallace. The dance with John Travolta in Pulp Fiction (1994) put her on posters around the world. She earned her only Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actress. But her relationship with the director was a mix of creative genius and real danger.
During the filming of Kill Bill in 2003, she was in a car accident that left lasting damage to her knees and neck. The stunt was performed without stunt doubles due to pressure from the production crew. That experience shook her trust in big studio productions for a long time. The car crashed into a tree at a speed that was not planned in the original script.
She tried to get back on track with romantic comedies such as Secrets Shared in 2005. But audiences preferred her in darker or physically demanding roles. She worked with Lars von Trier on Nymphomaniac (2013), where she delivered a nearly seven-minute monologue filmed in a single take. It was a return to pure acting without special effects.
No one expected this return to raw drama.
In 2022, she played Arianna Huffington in the series Super Pumped. It was a shift toward business and tech drama. In 2023, she appeared in the movie Red, White & Royal Blue, playing the U.S. president with a strong Texan accent. She fully moved away from the action heroine image that followed her for two decades.
Her priorities shifted toward projects where she could control the shooting schedule. In 2024, she filmed Oh, Canada under the direction of Paul Schrader. The film had a budget of less than ten million dollars and was shot in just a few weeks on locations in New York.
In 2025 her schedule included the thriller The Kill Room, where she shared the screen with her daughter Maya Hawke. The shoot in New Jersey lasted exactly twenty days of intensive production. The film grossed less than one million dollars during its limited release in U.S. theaters.
