Chiaki Kuriyama was fifteen years old when she ran through a forest in a yellow tracksuit with a knife in her hand. She was running to survive the fiction of Battle Royale, but also to escape a Japanese industry that devours new faces every week. During the filming in 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku saw something in her gaze that did not match the shyness of a teenager from Ibaraki.
Kuriyama was no newcomer to show business. She started as a child model in fashion magazines and clothing catalogs in the nineties, because her height and sharp features caught attention. But horror cinema soon claimed her. In 1999, she appeared in Shikoku, and shortly after she showed up in the original version of Ju-on: The Curse.
Nobody saw that twist coming.
It was Quentin Tarantino who pulled her out of the local circuit after seeing her as Takako Chigusa. The American director was so taken with her physical presence that he wrote the character of Gogo Yubari specifically for her. In 2003, the whole world saw her wield a chained mace in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, wearing a school uniform that became an unforgettable image.
Many expected Kuriyama to move to Los Angeles to pursue a Hollywood career after the film's worldwide success. But she chose to return to Japan. She knew that in the United States she risked being typecast as the latest Asian villain. In 2005, she accepted a role in Azumi 2 and proved she preferred working in her own language rather than being an exotic accessory in other people's blockbusters.
But her restlessness didn't stop at acting. In 2010, she began a career as a singer under the name CHiAKi KURiYAMA, with support from musicians of the caliber of Tomoyasu Hotei. Her debut single was the theme song of an animated series, and she went on to release several albums that performed well on Japanese sales charts.
Music was a temporary refuge.
Her transition to acting maturity was forged on Japanese television. During the 2010s, she appeared in dozens of dramas and suspense series. In 2013, she starred in the adaptation of Library Wars, where she proved that her ability to handle physically demanding action scenes was still intact. Japanese audiences respect her because she has never disowned her roots in genre cinema or the world of anime.
In recent years, she has carved out a very specific niche in cult television. In 2022, she began starring in Banshaku no Ryugi, a series focused entirely on the pleasure of drinking beer and eating well at the end of the workday. The show was so successful that its third season aired in 2024, confirming that her image as a cold, distant woman has given way to a much warmer and more everyday one.
And it worked.
Unlike other stars of her generation, Kuriyama keeps her private life locked up tight. She avoids social events and unnecessary red carpets. Her work is limited to the set and the contractually required promotions. In 2023, she appeared in the crime drama Keishicho Kyokohansaku Higuchi Akira, maintaining a work pace that rarely drops below three projects a year.
The actress turned 40 years old in 2024, with a filmography of more than fifty titles across film and television. Her contract with the Space Craft agency remains one of the most stable in the industry. During filming of her latest 2024 series, the crew noted that she still arrives on set with the script memorized from start to finish.
