At fourteen, Emma Suárez did not want to stand in front of a camera, but a newspaper clipping in her family's living room led her to the casting for Memorias de Leticia Valle. It was pure chance. With no acting school training and no drama diplomas, she stepped onto the set of Miguel Ángel Rivas and grasped how filmmaking works by observing the crew directly.
That lack of conservatory habits defined her approach to acting. She doesn't theorize about her celebrity roles in notebooks or search for complex psychological justifications. She builds them from the gut, with a gaze capable of holding fixed shots without blinking for entire minutes.
During the 1980s she picked up supporting roles under veteran filmmakers such as José Luis Garci and Antonio Drove. She performed classical theater under José Luis Gómez and learned to project her voice in half-empty theaters while others from her generation waited for calls from the major Madrid productions.
Nobody handed her anything in those first roles.
In 1992, Julio Medem put her in front of the camera for Vacas and broke the conventions of Spanish cinema of the era. The director from Donostia found in Suárez's eyes a mix of mystery and wildness that immediately fueled La ardilla roja in 1993 and Tierra in 1996.
Medem pulled the dramatic tension tight, and Suárez responded with a calm surface that concealed a muted violence. Audiences flocked to theaters, and the films travelled to foreign festivals with an unusually strong critical reception for independent auteur cinema of those years.
But it was Pilar Miró who demanded that she take the leap without a safety net in El perro del hortelano in 1996. Suárez memorized thousands of Baroque verses by Lope de Vega while filming the drama Tu nombre envenena mis sueños at the same time. That herculean effort earned her first award as a lead actress, after a grueling shoot that nearly wrecked her physical health.
And the gamble paid off.
Once she passed the milestone of forty, the phone stopped ringing with the excitement of the previous decade. The Spanish film industry relegated actresses of her generation to decorative roles as mothers or to brief appearances in quick-turnover TV dramas.
Because Suárez never relied on others' praise to carry a scene, she chose not to despair and turned to the theater. She starred in productions of Las criadas and Tío Vania, where the maturity of her face added weight to the texts instead of costing her work.
So when Pedro Almodóvar called her to star in Julieta in 2016, the actress came to rehearsals with her experience intact and without hesitation in the face of the demanding director from La Mancha.
At the February 2017 Goya Awards gala, the Academy of Cinema gave her the Best Actress award for the Almodóvar film and the Best Supporting Actress award for La próxima piel. In doing so, she achieved a double win at the Goya Awards that only one actress had managed in three decades.
That night she surprised those who had already written her off.
Rather than settling into easy box-office comedies, she sought out independent directors with raw, challenging projects. In 2021 she starred in Josefina under debut director Javier Marco, and in 2022 she shot La consagración de la primavera alongside Fernando Franco, taking on complex roles far from the comfortable mainstream.
In streaming, she took part in Néboa in 2020 and in the drama Intimidad in 2022. In 2024, she appeared in the thriller series Red Queen playing Laura Trueba.
In 2024, she shot the family drama Desmontando un elefante, the feature debut of Aitor Echeverría, in which she plays an architect who returns home after a stay in rehab for addiction.
Production on Hermanas wrapped its shooting schedule after twenty-five days of location filming in the Basque Country with an official budget of 1.8 million euros.
