Óscar Jaenada arrived in Madrid in the late nineties with no money to his name and spent several nights sleeping on benches at Atocha station. He was twenty, had a sharp jaw, and had no intention of setting foot in a drama school. He said acting teachers struck him as bureaucrats with no street smarts.
He survived by pouring drinks in bars in Malasaña and performing stand-up comedy in the capital's dive bars. So when Achero Mañas signed him to star in Noviembre in 2003, the street performer role was not too big for him. It was his own life, filmed in 35 millimeters. That job earned him a Goya nomination for Best New Actor.
Two years later, he holed up in an apartment in San Fernando, Cádiz.
To get into the skin of José Monje Cruz in Camarón in 2005, he learned to smoke like the flamenco singer, lost ten kilos at breakneck speed, and stained his teeth with nicotine extract. He won the Goya for Best Actor at just thirty years old, a feat few actors of his generation achieved so quickly. But Spanish cinema responded with its usual clumsiness. Offers started pouring in for clone roles as a quinqui or an Andalusian outcast.
Nobody knew what to do with him.
And Jaenada wasn't willing to wait around for phone calls at a café on Madrid's Gran Vía either. He packed his bags and went looking for work elsewhere.
When director Sebastián del Amo announced in 2013 that a Catalan would play Mario Moreno in Cantinflas, Mexican newspapers were outraged. The tabloid press led newscasts accusing the production of insulting the national heritage. They called him a usurper and a colonialist.
But the actor hired a speech therapist in Mexico City, memorized hours of recordings from popular tent shows, and copied the comedian's rapid-fire rhythm during six months of nonstop rehearsals. The film grossed thirteen million dollars at the box office during 2014. Months later, the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences gave him the Ariel Award for Best Actor on his own turf.
The critics' silence was absolute.
In 2018, he pulled off the same feat in Latin America with the role of Luisito Rey in Luis Miguel: The Series. He built a manipulative, petty, magnetic villain who captured audiences' attention from the very first episode. That character spawned T-shirts, mugs with his face on them, and millions of social media interactions, which the actor always watched with a certain distance.
Between personal projects, he took on work in Hollywood blockbusters to pad his bank account. He worked on The Losers in 2010, shared the screen with Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 2011, and took punches from Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: Last Blood in 2019.
Jaenada isn't ashamed to cash checks from the big studios. He never saw mainstream entertainment films as a disgrace, as long as the paycheck gave him the financial independence to choose his next steps.
In 2024, he shot The Platform 2 under Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia in industrial warehouses in Barakaldo, converted to simulate brutal confinement. In 2025, he filmed the series La suerte, set in the world of bullfighting, under director Paco Plaza.
During filming of that last project, he endured fourteen hours a day of prosthetic makeup to distort his features without relying on digital retouching in post-production.
