Miguel Herrán didn't want to step onto a film set. He wanted to fix engines in a neighborhood garage and spend sleepless nights roaming the sidewalks of Chamberí.

That early morning in 2014, director Daniel Guzmán was searching the streets of Madrid for a young man with no theater experience to star in his debut feature. He came across a group of young people and saw in Herrán an exact mix of contained aggression and childlike fragility.

He accepted out of pure curiosity.

Filming of A cambio de nada began in 2014 with no certainty about its commercial distribution in theaters. Guzmán pushed him for weeks to draw out a raw truth that no trained actor could fake in front of the camera.

In 2016 the Academy gave him the Goya for Best New Actor. He stepped up to the podium in an ill-fitting suit and confessed in front of the whole profession that before that film he saw himself as a criminal with no future. That statement broke the gala's usual protocol and set the foundation for his public image.

The Dull Thud of the Red Masks

Mainstream television gave him regular work in 2017 with Money Heist, which aired on Antena 3. Free-to-air ratings were modest, and the series seemed destined for oblivion after its second batch of episodes.

But Netflix acquired the rights for its international catalog at the end of 2017. Within months, his face was on billboards in Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Milan.

In 2018 he went straight from filming Elite, playing Christian. Combining both productions multiplied his media exposure at an uncontrollable pace.

And the industrial machinery nearly devoured him.

In the summer of 2019, Herrán posted a video of himself crying openly, with no filters and no self-help speeches. With a single post, he dismantled the fiction of youth stardom, showing the psychological cost of massive exposure he never sought. The industry applauded his honesty while his circle worked to manage the impact of that catharsis.

So he decided to space out his appearances and seek refuge in mid-budget stories. He shot Hasta el cielo in 2020 under the direction of Daniel Calparsoro, fully immersing himself in the world of industrial-estate robbers.

Prison mud and the cold of the steppe

In 2021 Alberto Rodríguez cast him as co-lead in Modelo 77. The production recreated with surgical precision the common-prisoner riot at the Modelo prison in Barcelona during the early years of the Spanish Transition.

Herrán lost twelve kilos on a diet of black coffee and night runs while preparing physically for his character, the accountant Manuel Gómez. The film hit theaters in 2022 and earned him his first Goya nomination for Best Actor.

Because the actor prefers physical hardship to digital artifice. In 2024, he premiered Valle de sombras after weeks of filming in the Indian Himalayas, with temperatures of twenty degrees below zero and emergency evacuations due to altitude sickness.

That same 2024, he led the cast of the miniseries Asalto al Banco Central, reuniting with Calparsoro for a technical recreation of the 1981 Barcelona hostage crisis.

Nobody walked away unscathed from that shoot.

In 2025 he shot La tregua under the direction of Miguel Ángel Vivas, a prison drama set in the Spassk 99 gulag, filmed in desert locations in Kazakhstan with an international co-production. Filming required 40 days of work with constant icy wind and a production budget set at four million euros.

Trivia about Miguel Herrán

Things you probably didn't know about Miguel Herrán

Daniel Guzmán spotted Miguel Herrán while walking down the street and offered him the lead in «A cambio de nada»; Herrán initially accepted because he wanted to have fun and meet the director of «Aquí no hay quien viva».
He won the Goya for Best New Actor for «A cambio de nada» at age 19, but kept training as an actor afterward, including at the Central de Cine.
He is a passionate motorcycle rider: he practices enduro, supermoto and motocross, and has even competed in endurance races with vintage motorcycles.
His love of vehicles started very early: by his account, he was riding a 50 cc quad from the age of three.
He also takes part in activities such as kayaking and cycling, and has said he is especially drawn to extreme sports because they make him feel alive.
Although he plays Río in Money Heist and Christian in Elite, he has admitted he hasn't watched either series because he doesn't like that kind of production or those characters.
While filming «Elite» he crossed paths with Arón Piper, with whom he later worked again as co-star in «La tregua» years afterward.
He has acknowledged that, if he hadn't gone into acting, he would probably have tried reinventing himself as a mechanic, thanks to his passion for motorcycles.
To prepare for his role in «Modelo 77», a film set in a prison during the Spanish Transition, he played an inmate involved with COPEL and was once again nominated for the Goya for Best Actor.
