Marta Etura arrived in Madrid at seventeen with a suitcase full of doubts. She enrolled at Cristina Rota's acting school because she wanted a solid foundation before jumping into casting calls. In 2001, Joaquín Oristrell noticed her for Sin vergüenza, and that opportunity immediately changed her career path.
And the gamble paid off.
That debut allowed her to work with experienced actors without being intimidated by the camera. Shortly afterward, she appeared in La vida de nadie in 2002, where she played a nanny trapped in a web of family lies. She earned her first Goya Award nomination at just twenty-four years old, making it clear that her gaze could carry the most austere drama effortlessly.
But widespread recognition would take a few years to arrive. She worked with directors such as Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón in La vida que te espera and showed that rural cinema also suited her physical presence. In 2006, she starred in AzulOscuroCasiNegro under the direction of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, and her performance as a prisoner who wants to get pregnant earned her another nomination at the Academy Awards.
In 2009, she played Elena in Celda 211, and that film transformed her career. The role was brief but essential to the emotional engine of the story. Thanks to this work, she won the Goya Award for Best Supporting Actress at a ceremony where Daniel Monzón's film swept nearly all the major awards.
In 2011, she became vice president of the Academy of Cinema alongside Enrique González Macho. It was a period of political tension and changes to the funding model that wore down her public profile. But she preferred to focus on internal management and on defending the rights of industry workers rather than chase easy applause.
Nobody expected that silence.
After her time at the institution, she decided her place was on stage and on film sets. In 2012, she starred in The Impossible by Juan Antonio Bayona, where she had a supporting but key role in the survival narrative. That international production gave her a close look at how the Hollywood machine worked on Spanish soil.
The adaptation of Dolores Redondo's novel marked a shift in scale for her career. She played Inspector Amaia Salazar in El guardián invisible in 2017 and reprised the role in the two sequels shot back to back. She carried the weight of a big-budget production while critics scrutinized her every gesture in an atmosphere of constant tension.
Because the success of the Trilogía del Baztán depended not only on the books but also on her ability to humanize a complex, traumatized character. In 2019, she premiered Legado en los huesos, and in 2020 she closed the cycle with Ofrenda a la tormenta on a streaming platform. Filming these installments demanded a level of focus that kept her away from other projects for nearly three years.
In 2023, she appeared in the series Los Farad for Prime Video, exploring the world of arms trafficking in Marbella in the 1980s. In 2024, she shot Invasie under the direction of David Martín-Porras, a science fiction project with a budget of three million euros for its production in Canary Islands locations.
