Synopsis of Humans

In the near future, the suburbs of London are full of synths, humanoid robots with artificial intelligence who work in homes as domestic staff. They look almost identical to a human being, but they have no self-awareness or feelings. Their arrival upends social life, because they replace human workers more cheaply and efficiently. The series follows the Hawkins family. Laura, a lawyer and mother of three, feels uneasy about these machines, while her husband Joe buys a synth to help keep the household afloat. Their teenage daughter Mattie, outraged by the breakdown of the family and the growing role of synths, begins to question everything around her. Humans, created by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, airs on Channel 4 and stars Katherine Parkinson and Gemma Chan.

Trivia about Humans

The series had a budget of £12 million. Filming began in the autumn of 2014, a few months before its premiere in June 2015.

Gemma Chan and the other actors playing the robots attended a kind of synth school led by choreographer Dan O'Neill.

Katherine Parkinson began filming six weeks after giving birth to her second child, and her part was shot over ten separate days.

Before the premiere, the series was promoted with a fake Persona Synthetics store on Regent Street in London, where passersby could create their own synth.

Several scenes from the second season were filmed in Thanet, Kent, and the crew used Botany Bay and West Bay as locations.

According to Channel 4, Humans is the network's most-watched drama since 1992, when The Camomile Lawn aired.

In December 2015, Digital Spy named Humans its "Top Show of 2015," praising its originality in a TV landscape crowded with crime dramas.

The first season earned a 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 62 reviews, and a 76 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 33 critics.
