Letitia Wright arrived in London from Guyana at age seven with a notebook full of TV dialogue. She had no contacts in the British industry. She only had the conviction that film was her natural path.
In 2011, she landed a small role in the series Holby City. It was her first taste of a professional set. Before that, she sent hundreds of emails to talent agencies that nobody answered. But she kept pushing.
And the door swung open.
Her role in Top Boy that same year caught the attention of London casting directors. She played Chantelle, a young woman caught up in gang dynamics. The realism of her performance avoided the usual clichés of the British crime genre.
In 2015, she starred in Urban Hymn. The film focused on the London riots of 2011 and earned her a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards. This was the moment her name started turning heads in Los Angeles offices.
In 2018, the release of Black Panther transformed her pay scale and global visibility. She played Shuri, the scientific mind of Wakanda. Her contract with Marvel Studios covered several films and brought a level of media pressure she had never faced before.
Critics praised her ability to bring humor to a politically charged plot. Wright was earning only a fraction of what she would later receive for leading the franchise. But money was not the main driving force.
During the shoot of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, she shared scenes with actors who had three times her experience. She learned how to manage downtime on big sets. Those endless pauses between takes gave her the time to design her own production company.
So she founded Threesixteen Productions with a clear goal. She wanted to produce stories the traditional system tended to ignore. Her approach centered on absolute creative control.
Money was not the main driving force.
In 2022, she starred in and produced The Silent Twins. The film tells the true story of the Gibbons sisters, who communicated only with each other. It was a complex project that required total control of body language.
But Wright's career had serious friction. In 2020, a comment on social media about vaccines sparked a public relations storm that nearly stalled her rise. The British press was especially harsh on her for months.
She overcame the setback through silence and technical work. In 2023, she premiered the western Surrounded, in which she plays a woman who poses as a man to claim a gold mine. The shoot in New Mexico was physically exhausting.
It was her first real physical test.
In 2024, she presented The Convert, a drama set in 19th-century New Zealand. The film earned modest numbers during its limited release but strengthened her position as an independent producer. The movie had an estimated production budget of $15 million.
