Synopsis of The Office

This British mockumentary follows the daily life of the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg, a fictional paper company. A film crew records the staff as they try to survive gray workdays in an office on an industrial estate. At the center is David Brent, the branch's general manager, who is convinced he's a funny, much-loved boss. His main goal is to be liked by his employees and colleagues, although his antics usually backfire. Gareth Keenan, a team leader who takes his role very seriously, watches everything with suspicion. Meanwhile, Tim Canterbury, a friendly salesman who is unhappy with his life, starts to feel attracted to Dawn Tinsley, a bored receptionist engaged to Lee, a grumpy and controlling warehouse worker. The show was created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, aired on BBC Two, and stars Gervais.

Trivia about The Office

After its initial broadcast on BBC Two, the series was canceled due to low viewing figures, but it later became a benchmark of British comedy.
The show has been sold to broadcasters in more than 80 countries, including ABC1 in Australia, The Comedy Network in Canada, and TVNZ in New Zealand.
The series led to an American adaptation on NBC, starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the equivalent of David Brent, who won a Primetime Emmy.
Gervais and Merchant also considered "Sitting" by Cat Stevens for the show's main theme.
Unlike most British sitcoms, the show used a single camera and no laugh track, a style that influenced later works such as Peep Show and Fleabag.
In 2004, it won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, becoming the first British comedy nominated in 25 years and the first to win it.
To celebrate the show's 25 years, Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook reunited for a special episode of «Remembers», which aired on July 8, 2026 on BBC Two and is available on iPlayer.
«The Office» won the Peabody Award in 2003, after receiving the British Comedy Awards for Best New TV Comedy in 2001 and Best TV Comedy in 2002.
