Ricky Gervais failed as a pop star before turning twenty-five.
In 1983, he formed the synth-pop duo Seona Dancing, and British audiences systematically ignored their synthesizers. That reality check sent him straight to an administrative management job at the University of London. He spent years there observing bureaucracy and the boredom of gray carpeted cubicles. But that office period was what actually funded his future.
He met Stephen Merchant at XFM radio, and together they recorded a low-budget pilot in 1999. The BBC took on The Office with plenty of doubts and first aired it in the summer of 2001. The early ratings were mediocre. Nobody understood why a pathetic boss named David Brent would stare into the camera for ten seconds without saying a word.
And the gamble paid off.
The series was sold to more than ninety countries and spawned an American version that still generates millions in broadcast rights today. Gervais wasn't going for cheap laughs. He wanted audiences to feel such intense secondhand embarrassment that it was impossible to look away from the screen.
The success of Extras in 2005 confirmed that his style was not a one-season fluke. In this production, he indulged in humiliating stars of the caliber of Samuel L. Jackson and Kate Winslet. But the real earthquake came when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association asked him to host the Golden Globes.
In 2010, he took the stage with a beer in hand and went after the most powerful actors in the room. The faces of the audience showed real panic because Gervais didn't follow the courtesy script typical of the industry. He returned as master of ceremonies in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020. His opening monologues have racked up hundreds of millions of views on digital platforms.
Gervais never apologized for his jokes. He always argued that humor should tackle uncomfortable subjects so society can process them. This philosophy led him to clash with parts of the critical establishment that accused him of being excessively cruel to minorities or to celebrities who had fallen from grace.
He just kept drinking from his can.
In 2019, he premiered After Life on Netflix, and the tone changed dramatically. The series explores the grief of a man who loses his wife and decides to punish the world with brutal honesty. It mixes dark humor with a sadness that many considered out of place for such a cynical comedian.
The show remained one of the most-watched titles on the platform for three seasons. Netflix paid 40 million dollars for the comedy special Armageddon in 2023. The show won the Golden Globe for Best Stand-Up Performance in 2024, despite social media cancellation campaigns.
Gervais lives in a mansion in Hampstead surrounded by animals and far from the industry parties. His Twitter account is a showcase of fox photos and outspoken attacks on blood sports. He doesn't need the approval of movie studios because he owns almost everything he writes.
In 2025, his net worth exceeded 160 million dollars thanks to the sale of the rights to his original formats.
