Rob Lowe shouldn't be here. In 1988, a sex tape recorded at a Democratic convention nearly buried his career when he was only 24 years old. But the actor survived his own public downfall at a time when social media didn't exist to put scandals in context.
He made his film debut in The Outsiders in 1983 under the direction of Francis Ford Coppola. That generation of young actors became known as the Brat Pack, and Lowe was the group's official handsome one. That pretty-boy label weighed on him for nearly two decades.
He appeared in St. Elmo's Fire in 1985, and his face was on posters across half the world. But Hollywood didn't take him seriously outside the teen movie circuit. He got sober in 1990 after hitting rock bottom, and from that point on his professional focus changed completely.
And the bet on maturity paid off.
Aaron Sorkin gave him the role of Sam Seaborn in The West Wing in 1999. It was a risky move, since Lowe had taken supporting roles in comedies like Wayne's World in 1992 to try to shake off his image. The political drama earned him back the respect of critics and his fellow actors.
The series won nine Emmy Awards in its first season. But Lowe left the show in 2003 over salary disputes and a clear lack of screen time compared to other cast members. He was paid 75,000 dollars per episode while his co-stars received raises that the studio denied him.
Because success in prestige television was a glass trap.
After leaving fictional politics behind, he tried to lead his own projects such as The Lyon's Den in 2003 and Dr. Vegas in 2004. Both failed in their first season. It wasn't until he joined Brothers & Sisters in 2006 that he regained the attention of a mass audience, playing Senator Robert McCallister.
In 2010 he joined the cast of Parks and Recreation to play Chris Traeger. That optimistic character, obsessed with physical health, let him poke fun at his own image as the perfect man. Audiences immediately connected with this ridiculous, exaggerated side of Lowe that he had never explored before.
Lowe realized that television was his natural territory.
In 2020 he premiered 9-1-1: Lone Star, in which he plays a New York fire captain who moves to Texas. The series became one of the pillars of the Fox network and kept him on screen for years. In 2023 he produced and starred in the series Unstable for Netflix alongside his son John Owen Lowe.
The project explores the relationship between a biotech genius and his introverted son, in a dark comedy tone. Netflix renewed the production for a second season that was filmed entirely during 2024. The actor holds a partial exclusivity deal with the Fox network for his entertainment and game show projects. In 2024, his estimated net worth exceeded 100 million dollars.
