From Stars to Acting

Ritu Arya was born in Guildford in 1988, and her first calling had nothing to do with the spotlight. She studied Astrophysics at the University of Southampton because she was curious about how the physical universe worked. But her creative drive won out, and after graduating she enrolled at the Oxford School of Drama to learn the craft from the ground up.

Her technical training gives her an analytical precision that she brings to her characters. In 2013 she landed her first major role on the daily series Doctors, playing Dr. Megan Sharma. 38 episodes of intensive learning, where she got a feel for the frenetic pace of British television before taking on bigger challenges.

Science stayed in the classroom.

The Assault on the Global Market

Arya's name began to gain real traction outside the UK thanks to science fiction. In 2016 she appeared in Humans, a series exploring artificial intelligence and the ethical limits of robotics. But her true international breakout came in 2020 when she joined the second season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.

Playing Lila Pitts allowed her to explore a physicality she had not shown before. The role demanded a balance between emotional vulnerability and the ability to perform choreographed combat. More than 45 million households watched her debut on the platform during the first month of that season's premiere.

That was the point of no return.

Hollywood soon came calling with big-budget projects. In 2021 she shared the screen with Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds in Red Notice, a production that grossed close to $200 million. It was a supporting role, but a strategic one that put her face on the radar of major American studios.

Consolidating Her Place in the Studio System

In 2023 she was part of the cultural phenomenon Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig. Her appearance as the journalist Barbie confirmed that Arya could move between satirical tones and saturated aesthetics without losing her naturalness. The film grossed $1,446 million at the global box office and became the biggest commercial hit of her career.

But her career isn't limited to acting in front of the camera. Arya plays drums and is part of the band KIN, where she explores a much rawer creative side than her film shoots. This balance between independent music and big-budget productions defines her professional profile in the 2020s.

In 2024, she premiered The Decameron on Netflix, a dark comedy set in plague-ridden Italy. The shoot took place entirely on location in Italy, and the production design recreated 14th-century villas with meticulous historical accuracy.
