John Cena was born in West Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1977. His first ambition was not movies or television but bodybuilding, which is why he moved to California with barely five hundred dollars in his pocket. He slept in a 1991 Lincoln Town Car because he couldn't afford rent while cleaning toilets at a gym in Venice Gold.
His entry into professional wrestling under the name Prototype was a survival move. In 2002 he debuted in WWE and for more than a decade carried the weight of an industry that needed him as an absolute hero. But movies soon called, and the results were disappointing.
The Marine grossed barely 18 million dollars in 2006. Critics tore apart his performance and typecast him as another expressionless slab of muscle trying to imitate Arnold Schwarzenegger's moves. And they almost succeeded.
For years he made mediocre action movies that went straight to home video.
Cena realized his physique was a barrier rather than a bridge. In 2015 he made a decision that action stars' agents often consider career suicide. He accepted a supporting and ridiculous role in the comedy Trainwreck, directed by Judd Apatow.
Appearing nude and parodying his own hypermasculinity on the big screen was his best financial move. Audiences discovered that this square-jawed man had a dry, precise comedic timing. So major studios moved his file from the action folder to the comedy one.
In 2018, he starred in Blockers and proved he wasn't afraid of looking foolish on camera. His salary began to climb in step with his ability to laugh at himself. But the big leap came when James Gunn recruited him to play a ridiculous antihero in The Suicide Squad in 2021.
That character named Peacemaker worked so well that it spawned its own television series in 2022.
He achieved what few wrestlers do. He didn't settle for being a supporting star in other people's franchises like Fast & Furious, where he played Jakob Toretto in 2021 and 2023. He wanted to headline his own projects, and he did it with a work ethic that his co-stars describe as obsessive.
And the gamble paid off.
During the Money in the Bank event in 2024, the actor announced his definitive retirement from professional wrestling. His farewell plan was set for 2025, with a farewell tour that would close twenty-three years of career in sports entertainment. This decision freed up his schedule to focus exclusively on producing and acting.
In 2024, Jackpot! premiered on digital platforms, directed by Paul Feig. Filming for the second season of Peacemaker was scheduled for 2025, securing his place in DC's new cinematic universe. He is no longer the guy who had to sleep in his car to make it to the end of the month.
Cena holds the world record for wishes granted for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with more than 650 encounters documented. No other athlete or actor has reached that figure in the organization's history. His public image is a fortified asset that insurance and video game brands exploit with multimillion-dollar contracts.
His WWE contract officially ends in December 2025.
