Mark Calaway stands 6 feet 8 inches tall. The Texas giant once dreamed of basketball hoops before stepping into the pro wrestling ring. But the basketball court proved too small for him, and the aggression of physical contact pushed him toward other stages.
In 1984, he debuted in World Class Championship Wrestling under a mask and the name Texas Red. He lost to Bruiser Brody. It was a low-key start for the man who would go on to define the aesthetic of gothic horror on American television for three decades.
And the business changed forever.
Calaway soon realized that a great physique wasn't everything in the entertainment industry. In 1990, he appeared at the Survivor Series wearing a black trench coat and gray gloves. He never blinked. His character, The Undertaker, worked best the less he spoke and the more room he left for the viewer's imagination.
He appeared in the movie Suburban Commando in 1991 alongside Hulk Hogan. The experience kept him away from Hollywood sets for years. Calaway preferred to focus his storytelling skills in the ring, where he controlled every shot and every silence without depending on a cinematographer.
He guarded the mystery of his private life with an almost pathological zeal. During the nineties and the first decade of the 2000s, he barely gave interviews outside his role as the Undertaker. This decision turned each of his appearances into an event that drew directly from B-movie cinema and German Expressionism.
His body began to take a toll after thousands of falls and fights with violence choreographed down to the millimeter.
In 2020, he closed out his competitive career with the Boneyard Match. It was an action short shot on location, with cinematic editing, incidental music and the atmosphere of a dusk western. It was the last time he laced up his leather boots for an official on-camera contest.
The production of the documentary Undertaker: The Last Ride in 2020 finally revealed the man behind the myth. Calaway allowed cameras to film his surgeries, his fears and his constant doubts about retirement. There, viewers saw a professional obsessed with controlling his public image to unhealthy extremes.
He signed a legendary contract with WWE for fifteen years in 2019. This move ensures his presence at special events and technical consulting work until 2034. Calaway stopped being just a wrestler and became a brand that the company manages sparingly to preserve the mystique.
And the gamble paid off.
On 1 April 2022, he was inducted into the company's Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Dallas. His speech lasted nearly an hour, in which he broke the fourth wall and discussed the psychology of fear. His annual income from image rights and merchandise sales exceeds two million dollars a year without ever having to step into the ring.
His estimated net worth as of 2024 is around 17 million dollars, thanks to real estate investments in Texas. Calaway lives on a ranch in Austin, where he raises horses and trains in a private gym that cost more than half a million dollars.
