Adam Copeland never expected a doctor to forbid him from returning to the ring in 2011. His neck was badly damaged, and his professional career seemed over at age 37. But the forced retirement pushed him toward TV studios much sooner than planned.
It was a headlong rush forward.
In 2011 he joined the cast of Haven. He played Dwight Hendrickson for four seasons, and there he learned that acting wasn't just about projecting his voice to thousands of people. The language of the camera demanded a restraint that Copeland had never needed in his earlier career.
During that shoot in Nova Scotia, he realized that his nearly six-foot-six frame was his most valuable asset in the eyes of casting directors.
The chance to change his public image came in 2017 with the production of Vikings. He grew a thick beard and dropped his clean-cut look to play Kjetill Flatnose. It was a demanding shoot in Ireland, where Copeland spent months working in the rain and constant cold.
His character was a tormented settler who ends up losing his mind on a deserted beach in Iceland. In 2020 his storyline ended with one of the rawest sequences of season five. And that's how he got the industry to stop seeing him as a mere special guest in one-off episodes.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Copeland has always managed his career with the precision of an accountant. He wasn't interested in starring in romantic comedies or generic big action movies. He preferred supporting roles with dramatic weight, where his physical presence could intimidate the audience without him having to say a single word.
In 2023 the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians gave him the role of Ares. Copeland fit the vision of the god of war because he brought a mix of real menace and very dry humor. He shot his scenes in Vancouver during several production blocks between 2022 and 2023.
But physical reality always takes its toll on a man who has lived by impact. In May 2024, Copeland suffered a broken shin after jumping from the top of a cage at an event in Las Vegas. He had to undergo reconstructive surgery right away.
That accident abruptly slowed his work pace during the second half of 2024.
Copeland's contract with AEW was signed in 2023 for a multi-year term and includes an exclusivity clause for televised events. At this stage, his annual salary exceeded three million dollars gross.
