Robert Alexander Szatkowski wasn't looking for Hollywood's spotlight when he started kicking heavy bags in Michigan. But his almost superhuman flexibility and that face of a nineties action star opened doors for modest productions. In 1995, he appeared in Superfights playing a mercenary. It was a small role that paid the bills while he tried to figure out whether his future was in the ring or on the screen.
His physique set the rules.
Van Dam never pretended to be a method actor or sought critical acclaim at Cannes. His move into film was a natural extension of his work in the ring. In 1997, he shot Bloodmoon and found he could keep up with the pace of martial arts choreography without needing professional stunt doubles. The film went straight to the home video market, but it taught him how shooting schedules really worked.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2002, he traveled to Thailand to work under Tsui Hark on Black Mask 2: City of Masks. It was a chaotic production with a budget of 13 million dollars that aimed to capture the look of comic books on the big screen. Van Dam played Claw, a villain who used his ability to perform impossible moves. But the final cut and the digital effects of the era buried much of his real physical work.
So he returned to focusing on his career as a professional wrestler without fully leaving sets behind. In 2010, he shared the screen with Dave Bautista in The Wrong Side of Town. It was a meeting of heavyweights where the script mattered less than the number of broken windows per minute. The film was shot in Louisiana and capitalized on the commercial pull of both wrestlers at a time of change for digital distribution.
Not everything was about the punches.
In 2012, he lent his voice to the video game Saints Row: The Third, playing a commentator. This foray into voice acting revealed a more relaxed side of his public personality (far removed from the flying kicks). Van Dam always knew that his voice and laid-back charisma were tools just as useful as his flexibility for staying relevant in the American entertainment industry.
In 2016, he appeared in Sniper: Special Ops alongside Steven Seagal. Production was fast, and filming wrapped in just a few weeks on locations in California. Van Dam played Vasquez, and the film focused on the digital rental market and streaming platforms. For a profile like his, success isn't measured in trophies but in the profitability of international broadcast rights.
In 2020, he shot The 2nd under the direction of Brian Skiba. In this action film, he played a supporting character in a storyline involving kidnappings and special agents. The movie starred Ryan Phillippe and was distributed mainly through on-demand services. Van Dam kept his physical form intact despite the passage of time and the injuries piled up over decades of professional competition.
In 2021, the WWE inducted him into its Hall of Fame. This official recognition didn't slow his work in independent productions. In 2023, he appeared in several episodes of national U.S. television programming, maintaining his status as a freelance entertainment worker. His last recorded film appearance was in 2024, with a brief role in a low-budget action movie.
Filming The 2nd cost approximately 5 million dollars.
