Kate McKinnon walked into NBC's Studio 8H in 2012 without knowing she would stay there for a full decade. She had been making waves on The Big Gay Sketch Show and brought an intensity that sometimes unsettled the writers. She wasn't trying to win over the average viewer. She preferred the technical grimace and the tense body over the people-pleasing smile of the traditional TV star.
And the gamble paid off.
She won her first Emmy in 2016 after turning political figures into caricatures that bordered on pure surrealism. Her take on Hillary Clinton was not a typical impression but a dissection of human ambition filtered through absurdity. In the production company's hallways, people knew McKinnon was the first to arrive and the last to put down the script. For her, comedy has always been a matter of math and facial angles.
During those years in New York, she perfected the art of the direct, fixed gaze into the camera. But movies began calling with the pull of big budgets and packed schedules.
In 2016, she took on the challenge of rebooting Ghostbusters with an all-female cast. Critics were sharply divided, but her role as Jillian Holtzmann was the only one that earned an almost unanimous positive response. The film cost 144 million dollars and grossed just over 229 million worldwide. It was a lukewarm box office performance that nonetheless did not slow her rise in the industry.
She shot The Spy Who Dumped Me in 2018 to prove she could carry a physical action plot without losing comedic rhythm.
She wanted more than the broad-comedy gag. In 2019, she appeared in Bombshell, playing a Fox News employee who operated in the shadows of the system. It was a dry, restrained performance. That same year, she appeared in Yesterday, playing an unscrupulous music manager who represented the bitterest side of the record business.
The industry wanted her for supporting roles that ended up stealing every scene.
She left Saturday Night Live in 2022 with a farewell that included a live alien abduction in front of millions of viewers. It closed out a demanding stretch of 11 seasons and 210 episodes that took a serious physical toll. Before leaving, she had already signed on to star in the series Joe vs. Carole, where she played Carole Baskin with a blonde wig and an unsettling coldness.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Barbie to bring Weird Barbie to life.
Her role in Greta Gerwig was a box office milestone, grossing more than 1,400 million dollars worldwide. McKinnon brought the touch of strangeness needed in a perfect plastic world. She is not an actress who seeks conventional on-screen beauty. She prefers the chaos of characters who have been battered by the game or by life.
In 2024, she lent her voice to the fourth installment of Kung Fu Panda, playing Chameleon. Filming for her next project, In the Blink of an Eye, was set under the direction of Andrew Stanton with a production budget that exceeded 40 million dollars.
