Lois Smith made her film debut in 1955. She appeared opposite James Dean in East of Eden, directed by Elia Kazan. She was twenty-four, with a gaze that already seemed to hold the weight of several different lives. She played Anne, the young woman who works in the brothel, and her quiet presence unsettled an audience looking for postcard-perfect stars.
That was not the start of a conventional rise to stardom.
She preferred New York theater to the restrictive contracts of the major studios in Los Angeles. During the 1960s she focused on the stage and let her image mature away from the spotlight of gossip magazines. Smith never sought to be the absolute center of attention.
In 1970, she returned to the big screen in Mi vida es mi vida. She played Jack Nicholson's sister, and her performance earned unanimous praise from New York critics. But she went back to Broadway almost immediately to keep sharpening her craft at the Actors Studio. The industry was never able to typecast her.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she became a constant presence in American independent and mainstream cinema. In 1987, she took part in Fatal Attraction, and in 1995 she joined the cast of Dead Man Walking. Her ability to convey fragility and toughness at the same time made her indispensable to directors seeking a gritty, human realism.
And that's the thing about Smith: she has a rare quality in show business. She doesn't need big monologues for the audience to understand what her character is thinking. Sometimes a minimal gesture while listening to another actor is enough. Her economy of expression is her greatest strength.
In 2002, Steven Spielberg called her for Minority Report. She played Dr. Iris Hineman, and her greenhouse scene remains one of the most memorable in the film for its scientific coldness. At seventy-two, her career was entering a phase of risky projects and complex celebrities.
Television was also her refuge for a long time.
Greta Gerwig cast her in 2017 for Lady Bird. In that film she played Sarah, the sister, and brought a dry tenderness that counterbalanced the teenage anguish of the lead character. That same year she starred in Marjorie Prime, exploring memory and artificial intelligence through a dense, philosophical script.
In 2021, she made history at the Tony Awards. She won Best Featured Actress for her role in The Inheritance at ninety years old. She was the oldest person to receive this competitive award in the ceremony's history up to that point.
Wes Anderson cast her in The French Dispatch in 2021 to play an art collector named Upshur Clampette. The production had an estimated budget of $25 million and grossed $46 million at the worldwide box office.
