Growing up surrounded by golden statuettes often ruins careers before they begin. For Ella Beatty, the danger was doubled as the daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. The easy route was to let an agent in Los Angeles pamper her and wait for calls from commercial franchises, but she chose to move to New York. She spent four years in the classrooms of The Juilliard School, graduating in 2022.
There, she discovered that the weight of a famous last name won't memorize your lines for you.
Her professional on-camera debut came in 2024 in cable television, playing Kerry O'Shea in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. Director Gus Van Sant and producer Ryan Murphy gave her a supporting but challenging role, where she had to share screen time with names like Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander. Instead of shrinking, Beatty went for a restraint in gesture unusual for a newcomer. Her character worked as a moral anchor amid the social decay surrounding writer Truman Capote.
And the move caught the right attention.
Her real trial by fire didn't happen on a set, but at the Belasco Theater in March 2024. Actress Elle Fanning left the cast of the play Appropriate, written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and Beatty auditioned to replace her. Sarah Paulson, the production's leading star, immediately gave her the green light after hearing her read a couple of lines.
Playing River left no room for technical hesitation. It was an abrasive black comedy where every diction slip was exposed in front of more than a thousand people per performance. She completed 10 weeks of uninterrupted performances before the season closed in June that year. New York critics praised her ability to build an innocence that bordered on pathos without losing comic composure.
That instantly dispelled suspicions of dynastic favoritism.
Far from settling into Broadway, in 2025 she accepted the role of the maid Regina Engstrand in a production of Ghosts, Henrik Ibsen's classic play, directed at the Lincoln Center circuit. That move confirmed that her artistic compass pointed toward the most demanding repertory theater rather than the red carpet.
Her leap to the big screen came with A24's stamp on the film If I Had Legs I'll Kick You, released in 2025 and directed by Mary Bronstein. Sharing the poster with Rose Byrne allowed her to explore a less solemn performance, grounded in dry realism and free of aesthetic artifice. She shot her scenes in marathon, low-budget days on the East Coast.
But her media breakthrough came in 2026 when Ryan Murphy cast her again. Beatty took on the lead role in the miniseries Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. Portraying the most infamous parricide in American true crime history demanded a rigorous physical transformation and months of court archives.
Filming the Fall River murders required 14 consecutive takes of the axe scene in sub-zero temperatures in Massachusetts.
