Lil Rel Howery grew up on Chicago's West Side, where humor was a tool for survival. In the local comedy clubs, he learned that laughter is a form of social control, and he wasn't chasing instant fame. He just wanted to pay the rent with stand-up sets in rooms where the audience won't forgive a weak punchline.
His early days in Last Comic Standing and P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy during the 2000s built a direct, no-nonsense style. Television gave him his first real break on the sketch series Friends of the People in 2014. But his real change of pace came far from the spotlight of traditional comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, the film Get Out permanently transformed his career. He played Rod Williams, a TSA agent who provided comic relief and a moral compass in the middle of a nightmare. That role earned him the MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance and moved him from the club circuit into the offices of major studios. Jordan Peele trusted his improvisational skills to bring air to a psychological horror plot that needed an anchor in reality.
After the success of 2017, big-budget projects followed. He appeared in Bird Box in 2018 and starred in his own series, Rel, from 2018 to 2019. Fox canceled the show after a single season. But that setback didn't slow his work pace in Los Angeles.
The industry cast him as a high-end supporting player.
In 2021, he starred in Free Guy alongside Ryan Reynolds. His role as Buddy proved he could carry big Disney budgets without losing the easygoing charm he developed in Chicago. That same year, he appeared in Judas and the Black Messiah, where he stepped away from comedy and into the political drama of the Black Panthers. His per-film salary increased tenfold in just three years of steady work.
Howery doesn't pick projects based on intellectual prestige. He works for volume and visibility. In 2022, he recorded the comedy special I Said It. Y’all Thinking It for HBO in his hometown. It was a return to his roots before he went on to a run of commercial comedies that dominated streaming platforms.
In 2023, he starred in Vacation Friends 2 for Hulu and appeared in the sequel Good Burger 2. His strategy is to alternate voice roles in animated films with everyday-guy parts in extraordinary situations. As a result, his name shows up in the credits of at least four productions a year.
During 2024, he worked on the adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon and kept his development deal for new TV projects. His box office draw is estimated at more than 500 million dollars in total earnings across the productions he has been part of. His latest stand-up special was completed on a budget of less than three million dollars.
