The Bartender Who Didn't Want to Be a Star

Dean Winters is not the typical method actor who spent his youth at elite drama schools. Before stepping onto a film set, he ran a bar in Manhattan with his brother. It was there that he met Tom Fontana. The screenwriter saw something in that dry, straightforward guy who poured drinks without much smiling. In 1997, he offered him the role of Ryan O'Reily in Oz. It was not television for every audience.

Winters played a manipulative sociopath who survived in a maximum-security prison without ever raising his voice. His character was the driving force behind the darkest conspiracies in the HBO series. And he did it with a calm that was chilling for the average viewer in the late nineties.

Audiences hated him and loved him in equal measure.

The series ran until 2003 and allowed him to move on to other projects on the network. But his face stuck as that of the tough guy who always has a plan up his sleeve. Winters has that look of someone who has seen too much on the streets of New York. So when Tina Fey called him for 30 Rock in 2006, nobody expected it to work so well in pure comedy.

Two Minutes of Clinical Death

In June 2009, Winters' life took a turn that had nothing to do with the scripts. The actor suffered a total collapse due to a bacterial infection that developed into sepsis. His heart stopped for exactly two minutes while the ambulance made its way through Central Park. Doctors managed to revive him, but the road back was an ordeal of operating rooms and physical pain.

Television literally saved his life.

He had to undergo multiple surgeries in which he lost two toes and half of a thumb. But he returned to work a few months later because he needed to pay medical bills that insurance didn't fully cover. In 2010, he accepted the role of Mayhem in an insurance advertising campaign that is still on air today. He embodied chaos personified, with an impeccable suit and a face covered in scratches.

Many actors would have turned down commercial work after working with prestigious directors. Winters didn't. He understood that acting is, above all, a job. That campaign gave him financial security that allowed him to choose his next steps in the industry more carefully.

The Supporting Actor Who Steals Every Scene

In 2013, he joined the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to play The Vulture. His character was an arrogant detective who took advantage of everyone else's hard work. It was the kind of role Winters excels at because he knows how to balance unlikability with magnetic charisma. He never sought to be the absolute lead of the stories. He prefers to walk in, drop three cutting lines, and leave, leaving viewers wanting more.

During the filming of John Wick in 2014, he showed he could keep up with the action scenes despite his physical limitations. He didn't ask for stunt doubles for most of his sequences. But the reality is that Winters has lived with chronic pain since that medical incident in 2009. It's something he rarely mentions in interviews promoting his films.

In 2021, he joined the series Girls5eva playing Nick. The project allowed him to explore a more absurd side, far from the criminals that marked his early career. But he always returns to the intensity that defines him. In 2022, he took part in the miniseries Joe vs. Carole, playing Jeff Lowe. It was a complex shoot where he had to spend more than three hours a day in the makeup chair to cover his own skin grafts and transform into the character.

For filming his scenes in the third season of Girls5eva in 2024, the production adjusted the schedule so he could shoot all his appearances in just four consecutive days.
