Kathy Bates was 42 years old when the world finally learned who she really was. Before that, she spent decades working stages in New York and taking supporting roles that barely paid the bills. In 1990, everything changed thanks to an obsessive nurse and a wooden mallet.
Her portrayal of Annie Wilkes in Misery won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. It was a hard blow to the industry, since Bates didn't fit the beauty standards of the stars of the era. But her unsettling gaze convinced Stephen King that no one else could play his villains with such humanity.
No one saw it coming.
That success was no stroke of luck. Bates trained in theater and was nominated for a Tony in 1983 for the play ‘night, Mother. And although Hollywood took the film version of that story away from her and gave it to Sissy Spacek, she didn't give up. She kept working on small productions until Rob Reiner came calling.
In 1991, she showed she could handle small-town drama with Fried Green Tomatoes. The film was a box office hit that grossed 119 million dollars on a modest budget. Bates played a middle-aged woman who regains her self-esteem, and audiences connected with her right away.
Her career in the nineties moved at a frantic pace. She worked with James Cameron on Titanic in 1997, playing Molly Brown. The shoot was tough and full of technical delays, but Bates brought the steadiness needed for a cast full of young faces. The production became the highest-grossing movie of all time up to that point.
But the road was not easy.
In 2003, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which she kept secret for years. She kept working while undergoing aggressive treatment because she didn't want the industry to see her as fragile. In 2012, she faced breast cancer and decided to have a double mastectomy to reduce her risk.
Following her surgeries, she developed chronic lymphedema in both arms. The condition affects her mobility and requires her to wear compression garments in her daily life. But rather than retreating, Bates began speaking publicly about the illness to raise awareness of a problem that affects millions of people.
And the gamble paid off.
Her entry into prestige television came in 2013 with the series American Horror Story. Ryan Murphy offered her extreme characters that earned her two Emmy Awards. In the season titled Coven, she played a racist 19th-century aristocrat, and her presence raised the production's profile with international critics.
In 2019, she worked under Clint Eastwood in Richard Jewell. Her role as a fierce mother earned her a fourth Oscar nomination and confirmed that her ability to move audiences was intact. Bates always preferred complex characters over the sweet grandmother roles often offered to actresses her age.
In 2024, she took the lead role in the reboot of Matlock for CBS. She plays a brilliant lawyer who uses her appearance as an older woman to outmaneuver opponents in the courtroom. It's a project that demands twelve-hour shooting days and an enormous amount of dialogue.
In September 2024, Bates announced that this would be her last job before fully retiring. The series premiered with 7.7 million viewers for its first episode in the United States. The first season contract includes eighteen episodes, which finished filming at the end of that same year.
