Rejection as a starting point

In 1976, Jessica Lange made her movie debut alongside a 40-foot mechanical gorilla. Critics were merciless, considering her just a pretty face in a wildly over-budget production. But Lange was no improvised model. She had spent time in Paris studying mime with Etienne Decroux, and that physical training ended up being her best weapon for surviving the initial disaster of King Kong.

In the following years, she avoided the naive blonde roles offered to her in Los Angeles. She took her time choosing projects that demanded real psychological depth. And the gamble paid off.

In 1983, she achieved a rare simultaneous double nomination at the Oscars for her work in Tootsie and Frances. It was a milestone not seen in Hollywood for forty years. She won the statuette as Best Supporting Actress for Sydney Pollack's comedy, but her performance as Frances Farmer was what truly showed she could carry dramas of suffocating intensity.

Prestige triumphed over looks.

Lange never felt comfortable with the fame that came with red carpets. In the 1990s, she moved to a farm in Virginia to raise her children away from the industry. In 1994, she won her second Oscar for Blue Sky, after a troubled production that sat in a drawer for three years due to the financial problems of the studio Orion Pictures.

The View Behind the Lens

Away from the film sets, Lange always sought the anonymity that let her observe without being seen. In 2008, she published her first photography book, 50 Photographs, featuring black-and-white images from her travels through Mexico and the United States. For her, the camera was a shield against constant public exposure.

Television rescued her from the selective oblivion of the major studios.

In 2011, she accepted a supporting role in the first season of American Horror Story at the insistence of Ryan Murphy. What was meant to be a brief appearance turned into a collaboration that lasted four years and won her back the favor of the general public. Her characters on the show were often complex women fighting against the passage of time and the loss of power in hostile environments.

But success on television didn't pull her away from the stage. In 2016, she returned to Broadway to star in Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugene O’Neill. For this role she won the Tony Award and completed the so-called Triple Crown of Acting, which very few performers achieve in their lifetime.

The Rigor of Maturity

In 2017, she played Joan Crawford in the series Feud alongside Susan Sarandon. The shoot was an exercise in technical precision, where Lange avoided parody to focus on the bitterness of a star watching her world crumble. In 2019, she published another photo book, Highway 61, focused on the route that crosses her native Minnesota.

The actress has always kept a careful distance from modern working methods. She prefers closed scripts and long rehearsals over facing a digital camera. In 2024, she took part in the shoot of the film Places, Please, playing a veteran of the stage who faces a complicated medical diagnosis.

Fifty years of craft back a career that began with a resounding flop and ended up holding a privileged place in the history of American cinema. Lange still spends long stretches in New York and avoids any presence on social media or digital platforms. The contract for her latest stage production in 2025 includes a specific clause limiting shooting days to a maximum of ten hours.
