Anne Heche won her first Emmy in 1991 for playing twin sisters on the soap opera Another World. It was a dazzling start that quickly put her on the radar of Los Angeles casting directors. That ability to play two characters on screen with a nervous and electric fragility became her trademark.
In 1997, she released three films that would have set the career of any actor for the next two decades. She shared the screen with Johnny Depp in Donnie Brasco and survived a wave of lava in Volcano. But it was her role in the political satire Wag the Dog that proved she could handle fast, cynical dialogue without missing a beat.
And the system welcomed her right away.
Harrison Ford personally chose her to star in Six Days, Seven Nights in 1998. The studio feared the actress's private life would affect the romantic chemistry on screen, since Heche had just made her relationship with TV host Ellen DeGeneres public. Ford ignored the pressure, and filming went ahead.
The Hollywood industry in the 1990s did not forgive the exposure of private life outside established norms. Heche later claimed that she lost a multimillion-dollar contract for several films because of her sexual orientation. Her presence on red carpets generated more interest in her partner than in her performances.
In 1998, she took on the challenge of playing Marion Crane in Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho. It was a shot-for-shot cinematic experiment that received harsh criticism from the specialized press. That professional decision coincided with a gradual withdrawal from major studio blockbusters.
It marked the end of her run as a leading star.
Starting in 2000, her career shifted toward independent film and prestige television. In Birth, she worked under Jonathan Glazer in 2004, delivering a restrained performance opposite Nicole Kidman. The industry recognized her talent, but the big offers with astronomical paychecks no longer reached her table.
In 2009, she found a new home on the HBO series Hung. For three seasons, she played Jessica Haxon and regained critical respect thanks to a character full of edges and contradictions. Television allowed her to explore registers that genre cinema had denied her in her youth.
She got back into her work routine.
She balanced supporting roles in series such as Chicago P.D. and The Brave with low-budget films she shot almost nonstop. In 2020, she took part in Dancing with the Stars to try to reconnect with the wider American audience. Her energy remained the same, but the media climate had become much more aggressive.
On August 5, 2022, she was involved in a car accident in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles, when her vehicle crashed into a house. After several days in a coma on life support, she was legally declared dead on August 12, 2022. In keeping with her expressed wishes, doctors kept her body connected to life support to complete the donation of her organs to patients on the waiting list.
In 2023, her final works were released posthumously in the feature films What Remains and Wildfire.
